O/T- 1994 7.3L international- not a powerstroke?

My cousin has a 1994 F-350 dually dumper with 180,000 miles on it. It's got an automatic and the 7.3L diesel. He had the engine replaced with an IDENTICAL YEAR engine because the old engine broke the crank. Now the slight problem is that it doesn't seem to have the power like the old engine did. This engine does not smoke like the old one did.

I am wondering if the old engine had the pump turned up which eventually broke its crankshaft right at the AT plate. We have no intention to get any more power out of the current engine except for putting in a higher gpm oil pump to compensate for the lower than normal oil pressure (this replacement has 80,000 miles on it).

Also, our junkyard said that the 1994 model year is not drop-in interchangeable with other years because this 7.3L engine is NOT a powerstroke and there are a lot of things different. Can anyone confirm this?

Buzzman is right. The late '94s were the first Powerstrokes. Early '94s were not Powerstrokes.

As an ex-Ford dealer parts counterperson, I know that a Powerstroke is a direct-injection [DI]diesel, and that the previous indirect-injection [IDI] 7.3's were NOT designated as Powerstroke engines....and that '94 MAY be either engine, depending on early or late production. '95 and up 7.3's were Powerstrokes.

Hope this clarifies things somewhat.

I've got a 94 F250 with a turbo 7.3 IDI engine (not Powerstroke). The 94 IDI turbo 7.3 differs from non-turbo 6.9s and 7.3s because the rods are slightly beefed up. Powerstroke came out late 94 and used direct injection.

Seems your power difference has to be related to either your turbo boost or fuel delivery. Mine has always run a max. boost of 9 PSI.

dds, The 7.3 hit the market about 89 and ran untill the 7.3 power stroke came out. 7.3 PS is a completely different engine , block is about 2
inches longer. The early 7.3 is basically the
6.9 with bigger bore and slightly different heads.
Crank, rods, cam and many other parts are same as 6.9.
BTW where in md are you ? george
