Need some help from you guys, I have a Billy Goat lot blower with a 10 horse Briggs OHV that had been breaking push rods last year. I took it to a shop to have it fixed but the shop was a joke, so i got it back and repaired it my self. Turns out that Briggs says these engines need to be run on premium fuel because the low octane fuel has to much crap in it. The engine has had problem with the exhaust valve seizing in the guide and will end up unseating the guide. I took to the head to a shop and had the guide reset and reamed out a few thousands. I have it all back to gether and running but i only set the gap by the tappet wiggle method in the field. Does anyone know what the tappet gap values should be on these engines hot or cold? Thanks

Gap is.004 on both valves. Regular gasoline and use Sea Foam additive for gas that you will keep over 30 days.

set it at .004. these engines do not need to run on premium fuel, they run just fine on 87 octane fuel. The problem is if you buy fuel and store it over 45 days, the gas starts to go bad and that is what causes the valves to stick in the guides. Buying premium gas only costs you more money and the end result will be the same, if it sets, gas goes bad and causes the problem you have.

I would have had to agree with you a few years ago but the advice to run premium fuel is right from the manufacturer. The shop I spoke to has had this advice given to them from both Briggs and Echo. I run a landscape company and have 4 of these engines on different machines, Little Wonder and Billy Goat. I also have a 9 hs Robin and a 8 hs Honda and have never had an issue with these but 3 of the Briggs have had the same problem. Unless the fuel is old when we purchase it, I doubt that is an issue. These lot blowers run about 4 hours a day so fuel is never in them long enough to get old. One engine shop advises running Marvel Mystery oil in the fuel to avoid the issue, so may have to try that. Thanks for the advice. will have to gap it today.

You may want to post this also over on the Garden Tractor page. There a lot of knowledgeable people on there and most likely know the setting by memory.
