I'm not sure what it is but it reminds me of STP. Has anyone ever tried it on roller chain, sickle bars and the like?

I use it on the roller chains on most of my eguipment. It sticks on much longer than used motor oil. You can also use nondetergent motor oil which is also somwhat sticky. I buy bar and chain oil in 5 gallon pails at fleet farm and its about half the price of nondetergent motor oil. Don't use it on chains that run in dirt like planter chains as it will stick the abrasive dirt to the chian and wear the sprockets faster.

I always just use old crankcase oil. Need to get rid of it anyway, seems to work ok.

I haven't done any scientific studies to back this up but when I was doing quite a bit of chain saw work it seemed to make a difference. I would put whatever was handy including used oil. But after I used chain oil made for that purpose I don't intend to use anything else. The chains lasted longer. If you don't use a chain saw much it won't make much difference. It seems to me that some of the impurities in used motor oil would cause wear on the chain.

molasses. That's why my dogs lick at the bar. J/K, but you'd think it was, as dumb as it sounds to have my dogs lick the bar.

I am led to believe it's one or both - molybdenum &/or glycerine ( glycerol ) which is a syrupy - plastircizer - colorous liquid . That the stuff ( ha ha ) that makes it stay on fast-moving parts instead of flying off & getting all over my glasses . I'm sure you'll get 300 other explanations . Good luck sorting out the wheat from the chaff . james in Australia .

James; Thanks, you may be right. I use the old motor oli in the winter, the cold keeps the oil on the bar and chain. In the summer I prefer to use the sticky bar&chain oil.
