If decide to go with the 12v conversion, let me know. I just took one off of my 861. Converted it back to 6v for OEM reasons. There is absolutly nothing wrong with what I have, I will make you a good deal. I just want to get it out of my garage. You get alt and brackets, wiring harness, resistor, and starter solenoid. Heck I'll even throw in the 12v sealed beams for the lights. My email is open if you are interested.

Looks like Im with Gerald (as usual) on this one. On 6 volt systems I recommend the biggest heaviest highest rated battery that will physically fit into the compartment and the use of good heavy 00 Gauge Battery n Starter n Ground Cables, keep all the connections clean n tight and the engine well tuned n she oughta start n run just fine even in extreme cold climates. That way shes all original and replacement parts are standard n she not jusr rigged. Often if they dont crank well in winter theres other problems the cause.

Of course, if you wanna convert its your tractor and your choice and I will admit they do crank faster at 12 volts but theres things to convert etc.

I"ll second John on his proposal. I know cranking is faster with 12 volts, but they started all right 50 years ago. Are we saying we cannot keep them in tune as well as them "old-time" farmers who prolly only timed them staticallyand set up the carbs by ear? I ldidn"t spell it "olde-tyme", "cos it wasn"t that long ago!! One of the problems is they don"t make batteries like they used to. Progress, I suppose. Everybody(?) wants a cheap battery - and they are cheap compared to 50 years ago!

Its run for 4 years or longer on 6 volts. 6 volt systems always have needed more attntion to connections in the starter circuit, but going to 12 volts only delays the appearance of problems, doesn't prevent them.

6 volts was original.
