Hi Guys,
I've got a Ford 600 that starts hard and once started and while running it stalls. After running for 5-10 minutes of idling, etc. it will just stall.

What is the best thing to check to trouble shoot this? The coil looks pretty old...could that be the cause - loosing spark maybe?

Thanks in advance!

I have a 600 that had a similar problem. Two things occured at different times.
The first was a sticking float valve that caused the fuel to fill the air intake hose flooding the tractor. I pulled the hose off and the fuel came pouring out. Your float valve may stick shut as well.

The second instance was what I call vapor lock. The tank gets hot from engine heat causing the fuel to boil. I drilled a small hole in the cap allowing the tank to vent. This seemed to help.

I would start by pulling the drain plug on the bottom of the carb. Let fuel drain out of it for 5 minutes at the very least, catch it in something to save your self a few $$ and also so you can make sure it doesn't have a lot of rust/dirt in it. If you have good flow then I would check spark at the plugs. It needs to be a nice brite blue spark. If it isn't then points and condenser may be needed. If it is a good brite spark start it up and when it dies check for spark again. If you don't have spark then jumper across the ignition swithc or hot wire it to make sure its now a bad switch. If that doesn't help replace the condenser, if that doesn't work then on to the coil.

Could be coil, could be condenser, could be carburetor, fuel line, fuel filter or a screen in the carburetor inlet fitting or the tank outlet. It would be plugged gas tank vent (often the cap, a modern car cap doesn't vent) but it should idle longer if its the gas tank vent.

Could be some of all of the above. Your task is to find which without replacing the tractor.

There are some things you need to do when its still running but about to stop. You need to observe whether it quits abruptly or sputters first. Then if it sputters you need to see if adding choke will make it run better momentarily.

If the choke helps for a bit, its starving for fuel. If it stops apruptly its more likely ignition. Coils heat for ten minutes and short a turn which kills the spark. Then you check for spark. I just pull the center wire from the distributor. Good spark should jump more than a quarter inch that wire end is held near the block and that spark should be blue. Yellow and skinny isn't good, probably shows a bad condenser. No spark at all hints at stuck points or a bad coil.

If its fuel starvation there's restriction to flow in the fuel system. There's probably a drain plug in the bottom of the carburetor. With that pulled and the valve open at the tank there should be a pencil sized stream of fuel for as long as you test (until you run the gas tank dry). No slowing. Then if its slow or stops you take the lines off until you find a good flow and fix the problems. There is often a screen attached to the inside of the fuel line adapter at the carburetor inlet that is prone to clogging with dirt and varnish. It will stop a tractor and your Ford is old enough for that.

I just thought about the problem again. You could also use a timing light hooked up to either the coil or #1. If the light stops flashing before it dies completely it's ignition. If the light flashes until the engine is stopped, it's in the fuel system.

It could be the coil or dirty or out of adjustment carburetor. If you have an inline spark tester, try running the tractor with the tester hooked up. You could also use a spare plug to check for spark. But remember, sometimes a weak coil can fire a plug out of the cylinder, but can't fire it under compression. You should get a fat blue spark at the plug. This will narrow it down to either the ignition or the fuel system.

Blow rust from fuel line even if filter is clean.
