My hyd. pump runs off the front of the engine. so when you have to replace a belt you need to unbolt the shaft. I put the tractor in gear so I could turn the bolts but the crank would turn. I was not having any trouble with the clutch, would it be getting weak.

A trick that I've used on small engines.....Get number one coming up on compression stroke (check that the rotor in the distributor is pointing to number one)Take out the spark plug then back the piston down to the begining or end of the compression/power stroke depending on which way you have to turn the bolts. Feed lotsa yellow nylon rope into the sparkplug hole, leave the end sticking out, then allow the piston to come up and wedge it against the head. This will prevent your engine from turning over without hurting anything. When you are done back the piston off and carefully remove the rope and reinsert the plug.

Yep they can be fun to loosen up, no matter what gear you have the tractor in. Thats why impact tools are so nice to have. If you don't have an impact block the wheels, lock the brakes and if nothing else use a cahin or cable to a tree etc and sooner or later you will find some place it will hold. Not likely its the clutch if it drives ok other wise

I had it in both hi and low and the engine still would turn over.

Did you have the tractor in the lowest gear, or was it in the highest gear? In the lowest gear the engine can turn quite a ways before the tractor moves, and the tractor will move fairly easily. In high gear it is much easier to keep the engine from turning because it (you) won't have enough power to move the tractor.
