Guess that's an arguement FOR RFID tags. I had one find a new mother the other day, kind of on the same subject. Had a pair of twins about three weeks ago, mother fed them both for about 3 days then abandoned one. I'd been bottle feeding it for 2 weeks now,but saturday,it seemed full and wouldn't take the bottle. Well, this morning I found the not so good news about it,it was sucking a cow that hasn't calved yet. I just hope she takes her own when she has it and has some colostrum for it.

Colostrum is a one time thing. Would be a good idea to get her calf when she has it some supplmental colostrum. If you bottle feed an abandoned calf or any mother less calf you should always pen him up. 90% of cows with twins have to be isolated in a seperate pen or pasture with the calves until the calves learn to searh her out or she will abandon one. Its just not in a cows nature to raise two calves. Most times the calves will have to be a month or two old before they are smart enough to locate their mother in a herd. As for the way ward calf and national ID. You and the owner would have to file and pay the filing fee, with the goverment so they [the goverment] would know were the critter was for the time he was away. Big invasive goverment at its best.

Yeah just what was so wrong with branding and brand registration? Oh it's not humane but letting cattle rustlers off easy is okay?
