I was given a Gibson Model D tractor a week or so ago. It is in BAD BAD need of a new set of brakes. Does anyone know of a source? Will any other type of brakes work?

We had a guy that had 50 sets made up a few months back. We also have drawings for them in our files

Mike//You may be able to build them from emergency brake band of old chrysler products or older trucks.

Is it a band or shoe type ? some of the truck clutch and brake shops may be able to reline them.

They are bands. I have only gotten one side off as of yet and the metal band itself has rusted entirely in two. This particular tractor had sat in a cow pasture for 20 plus years. The former owner did have enough foresight to put it up on blocks but it was still exposed to the elements. water must have sat in the housing and eat away the bottoms of the bands.

I got is running in just a few days. But it will not stop at all. So I broke the rear end down in order to get to the brakes. They are about two inches wide and go around about a 6 or 8 inch drum; I'd have to measure in order to get the official deminsions. I suspect the other side is just as bad.

I wouldn't rule out makeing new bands from some sheet steel either ? You may also find something close to rework like bands from a JD LA or the small Allis Chalmers models like a B or C ?
