Farmall Super C reverse polarity and generator

At the time I bought the C, the battery was hooked up std neg ground. The C would run for awhile (ammeter showing 6.7), then sputter and die. Battery drained. Discovered in a manual that some Farmalls are pos grd.
I inferred tractor was running off batter, generator not functioning.
Have replaced cables, rotor, plugs and wires, switch. Generator (breaker, no voltage regulator) is being rebuilt by a local shop.
I clearly don't understand reverse polarity and haven't been able to find 'rev pol for dummies'.
Sorry for the long post but any suggestions of where to find basic info on rev pol?
and why did the tractor run fine with the battery connected incorrectly (neg grd)? I clearly don't understand reverse polarity.

Long time ago bought a junker 60's something Ford Falcon (I think) for $50.00.. Drove it for 4 months before I discovered why the radio didn't work. Yep the battery had been installed backwards. Connected it properly and wow everything that didn't work started working.

Not sure why it didn't blow the radio and don't remember polorizing the generator but must have.

Would you believe thats not really reverse polarity. Up till around 1955-1960 all cars, trucks and tractors where + ground. But when they started useing alternators they switch to - ground. An engine will run either way but the chargeing system has to be set up that way and also the coil need to be set up for what ever ground you use. If its still 6 volts my self I would use it + ground since it came that way when new

Simply put yore tractor don't care if it's neg or pos ground, AS LONG AS ALL systems an components are grounded an or polarized the same. If the generator an coil are wired/polarized for pos ground an the battery is installed neg ground (backerds), then yore generator is tryin to DISCHARGE the battery and yore coil is trying to make sparks while sufferin reverse polarity. Untill alternaters an computers got involved electricity could go either way, but it can't go both ways on the same vehicle. By the way yore lights couldn't care less.
