OT: Cummins engine problem/question

I have a standby generator with a Cummins 6A3 461 engine. It does not have many hours on it, about 400, and it's always started and ran great. Recently I moved to a new house and I took the system with me. When I moved it I drained all of the fuel so it wouldn't make a mess. When I reinstalled the generator I primed it and it fired right up and ran great. A few days later (last Sunday)I went to start it and it had lost it's prime so I primed it again and let it run for over an hour. Today I tried to crank it and it's lost it's prime again. So, what would cause it to repeatedly lose prime that quick? I snugged up all of the fuel line connections and I see no leaks. Any ideas?

I dont know what kind of fuel system that Cummins motor has,but if its like the ones on big trucks,on the back of the pump that pumps fuel to the injectors there is a block thats held on by long allen head screws, inside there are a couple of o-rings that can get hard and lose prime,or the screws might be loose on the pump. They hold the head for the spin on fuel filter,or the fitting for the supply line to the pump if it has a remote fuel filter.I will try and find a picture of that motor someplace and see if it looks the same as what Im talking about.

We had a tractor that had been working fine, we changed the fuel filters and it started doing that same thing. After checking and for leaks several times we ended up changing the prime pump and that fixed it. Seems the little pump was letting air in around its seal (it's on the suction side so fuel never leaked out) and after sitting for a while it would loose its prime.

Check the tank vent. If its plugged, even a little, the vacuum will suck the fuel back out of the line when you shut down. Run it for a bit, then loosen the fuel cap. If you get a "whoosh" thats the problem.

No Expert by any means but check for an air leak in the return line which allows air in when off and the fuel to drain back to tank. Happened to my truck a couple times.
