600 tractor battery question

My Dad has a Ford 600. He had to move to a nursing home and I am left with the tractor. The battery in the tractor is kaput. So, I bought a new 6 Volt battery. Do I install this battery with "reverse" cabling? That is, I believe the old battery had the (P) cable hooked to the (N) post of the battery and the (N) cable hooked to the (P) post of the battery. Is this the correct hookup for the Ford 600? Thanks alot for your help.

Thanks alot for the quick response. That will make me feel alot better when hooking this up that way. Also, is it a bad idea to use jumper cables from a 12 Volt pickup battery to this 6 Volt tractor battery?

NEVER hook a 12 volt battery to a 6 volt battery or it can/will blow up in your face. If you have to jump start it hook the + cable to the tractor frame and the - cable right to the stud on the starter, make sure its out of gear and make sure twice because as soon as you hook the cable up to the stud on the starter then engine will start turning over, there will be sparks when you do that also

I believe you have your terminology a bit backwards. the polarity of the cable is the same as the battery cable. Thus. the P tractor cable goes to the + battery terminal.. and this is the ground.

The N battery cable goes to the - battery terminal, and this goes to the starter solenoid.

This is called positive ground. First thing you will want to do is pick up an owners manual and a shop service manual. Either original reprints, or newer versions ( I&T FO-19 is the new version of the NAA service manual ).. etc.
