Went out this morning and looked at my baler. Allen was right in that stripper roll was almost 1/2" from tubes.Got out the wrenches and adjusted this. While doin this I found that the idler on the drive side of the stripper roll had backed off and there was a lot of play between the chain and gears. When I finished adjusting the stripper roll I fixed the idler and fired her up.She sat there and ran better than she has in a while.I went to the field and started rolling. Got 1 rolled up,tied off and kicked out. Finally starting to think things are looking up. Get to end of field and start to swing over onto another windrow.WHAM!!! Baler locks up.Tubes look awful funny and out of kilter.Open up baler and chain on right side has broken a link.Done for the day again!Anybody need a good 853 for cheap? Oh well.

Several people I know have had trouble similar to yours with an 853 and air bags. I use a couple of 851 balers and they couldn't be more trouble free.

Actually, it's quite amazing how many of those old 851s are still earnin' their keep.

The 851 was the very first conceived, desinged and built round baler and has had many, many improvements done to it since it's original debut.

But, like all things, the buying public has became used to being a "throw away" society. Instead of sinking a thousand dollars in an old machine, we'd just rather buy another baler.

Enter the belt balers. Ever notice that you don't see any old belters still being used? :>)

Tom,

I just know I'm gonna regret asking this. :>(

But, did you adjust that empty chamber main chain tension first and adjust the stripper to the closest bar? Have you got proper air bag pressure?

If that main chain is running loose it can hang up on the stripper roll and tear itself right out of there.

Sure hope ya get that guy going.

Allan

I had adjusted the main chain tension the day before.I had tried all the way from 35psi to 50psi on the airbags the day before. I have been rolling with this thing for about 6 years now but it is getting to the point that I work on it more than with it. It has 2 new airbags on it and other numerous parts through the years trying to keep it reliable. I make my living solely from my farm income and have layer houses, beef cows and rowcrop cotton so I need something that I can go to the field with and get through and go to the next job. This is just getting too old for that. Thanks for the help though. P.S. if you want this for a spare it can be had for scrap iron prices and a trip to lovely LA(lower Alabama).Hasn't snowed here in 12 yrs.

Good! I was sweatin' that one because I hadn't mentioned the tension thing a couple of days ago. Thought maybe I had caused your difficulties. :>(

But, it sounds like you've already covered all the bases.

I hear ya. I've got another baler that is strickly on standby. The last thing ya need when the hay is ready go, is to be broke down.

Puts a feller in a bad mood. Good luck to ya, Pard. :>)
