My dad came out from town to watch the planting yesterday and while we were standing there talking I got to thinking about the changes he has seen in the very field we were standing in. He first planted that field with a JD A and 290 JD planter, using check wire and planting corn at a population of about 12000. The ground was prepared with that same tractor and a 12 foot spring tooth harrow. Yesterday the field was being planted with a planter that covered a 60 foot swath, putting 32000 seeds per acre in the ground, being pulled by a tractor that was steering itself while the operator was entering the corn variety into his laptop. The ground was prepared with a 65 foot cultivator pulled by a tractor that also steered itself. Will we see as much change as he has?
I have fun running this new stuff, but I still have more fun wrenching on the old iron. Jim

I'll tell you what we'll be seeing soon. There's nothing else you could possibly care to see change in. Jesus is coming. Amen.

In 60 years after the petroleum fertilizer and fuel is gone we'll be using the A at 12000 seeds again.

It's interesting to think about what happens if/when the oil stops. Small numbers of farmers working large acres of land would become a thing of the past . A lot of people would have to move out to the country and start subsitence farming with animal power just to survive.

There is a mechanic in Stratford who got his start as a kid helping the local blacksmith. Some of what he did was heat iron wheel rings to then beat down over wooden spoke wagon wheels.

He's in his 90's now, but still makes it down to the coffee shop and the garage he owns.
