What would the going rate (price) for custom plowing and discing be. I have been asked to do about 20 acres of old grass for some one. Clean soil. Thanks

Hmmm. It's a while since I really sat down and figured out some honest costs on that.... but probably 5 or 6 years ago I did. To cover fixed and variable costs on a 70 hp tractor and a 4 bottom variable width plow, on fuel prices of those days (about half of today), it ran right at 40 bucks an hour for the gear to break even. ADD an operator and some profit on top of that. It's not leaving the yard for less than 70 an hour today if I'm on it, and that's still cheap.
That will plow 2-2.5 acres an hour in decent conditions.
Discing would mabey be a bit cheaper, but not much.

Rod

My big tractor burns 5 gallons an hour that's $3 time 5 = $15 add that to $20 operator cost and $20 tractor cost and $20 profit it you hire an operator and you could pretty much brake even $75. Thing are are not cheap now you break down and and it cost all your money that made for job to fix it and you can go in the hole real fast.
I do a lot small jobs Mowing tilling brush-hogging in the spring and I charge $50 for my small 30 HP diesel Kubota and it pretty much is break even deal for me. But I get to buy some new and bteer equipment and it pays for breakage when haying for myself so I guess it all works out in the end.
Walt OH I have $200 minimum you need that if you have to haul equipment around from place to place. I always let the people know and they usely find other things to do while I am there.

With out knowing for sure where you're located...the rates can vary from location to location.

To get you started, it might be worth your time to take a quick look at the following custom rate guides

Iowa:>Link href=" Link

I know Iowa and Missouri extension web sites have publications on custom rates. They show a range of prices. Don't forget this week's cost of fuel.

You talking a flat rate or by the hour. Now days you have to get at least $50-75 an hour to run a machine and thats a small at that like say an 801 ford.
