Ultimate cheap. Switch to high beams and readjust them two little screws to lower them. Wait until nother one burns out. Who needs high beams? Use headlight money to buy gas!

You"re talking bulbs here, Look closely. Each bulb has two filaments, the vehicle is wired to feed the brighter filament in the high beam location. The vehicle is wired to feed the "low" filament in the low beam location. THE OTHER FILAMENT IN THE BULB WAS NEVER USED! I trade the bulbs in the hi&low position. Then when both filaments are burned out in a bulb, I replace the bulb. In the 4 light sealed beams, the LOW usually goes out first. I replace the unit. But I save the unit, as the high side still works. The one prong is ground, one is low feed, the other is high feed. I remove the high prong, and solder a jumper wire across from hi to lo. Now I have a spare, two-prong, Hi beam replacement sealed beam lamp. I rarely need to buy headlights!

I replace both unless I plan to unload it rather soon. There are some Super Blues and Sylvania SilverStars that would help the missus out in the rain and dark. These bulbs are street legal and only differ in the color of the light thrown and quality of the bulb. Cost more, but you"d expect that anyhow. If properly aligned, they should look like any other light by passing drivers. Ultimately up to you... HTH

If the bulbs are the same age replace both, most likely if it died due to age the other one will go out soon. The bulb makers have that figured out pretty well.

IH2444, I"ll guess here and say the bulb is on the "kerb" side of the vehicle (we say the "near-side"). Most failed bulbs are on the side which gets most jarring from ruts, drains and the like.
just my thoughts on the matter, so I would only change out the dead bulb.

Well it has always worked that way for me. One go out and the other one will with 2-3 months.
I put the one that still works in the trunk for an emergency spare.

My reasoning is to replace both low beams so they would be the same brightness? Maybe there is no weakness in an older bulb and they just go out.
The hi beam bulbs are both working.

Your question was not clear to me, in that are you talking about replacing both low beams or the hi beam while you replace the low? Anyway most of my night driving is in traffic so lights are left on low beam. When using lights in the daylight we use high beams, this balances the use of hi and low, as filaments are in the same bulb both get changed when one fails.

On her car there are separate bulbs for both the hi & low beam that plug into the back of the housing in 2 locations. Will stop by the auto parts store and see what they want for them.

I've always thought of that too, "well the other one is due to go soon now" usually replace em both, leave the old but good one for a spare, sometimes, I just keep a spare set of new besides replacing them, they stay in and with that vehicle, including spares for tail lights. It's hard to say when that filament is going to break, the on/off cycle and vibration eventually does em in, I think, my theory, could be wrong. Usually at an inopportune time too.

My rationale is law enforcement, in the past few years they are relentless, anything wrong, the slightest deficiency, a light out, is guaranteed to get you pulled over around here. They don't care if it just went out, now whether you get cited for it is a different thing. Always be friendly and have your license, registration and insurance card in hand by the time he/she gets to your window, I keep them at arms lenght when in any vehicle, bugs me if I don't know where they are.

I check my vehicles constantly, and have always done that. Has always buggged me when I find a light out, must get immediately taken care of, but with the recent attention by law enforcement, it's a good practice to check often and have spares. Just one of those silly things that can save you a hassle, and is a safety concern that could haunt you if an accident were to happen.

Even then, darned thing will go out and it's the luck of the draw. Was out late one night in January, worked a long day, decided to go out and meet my lady friend for dinner, and listen to the live music. On the way home, got pulled over for a brake light out, had spares with me, changed it on the spot in front of the officer. He was super cool, very polite, I appreciated that, but nonetheless, when you least expect it, they burn out and you're stuck unless you a spare.

Replace both. Lots of the bulbs come it packs of 2. Plus, you can get much better bulbs now than were available when the car was built. You will be able to see the difference at night. Buy 2, you know if one went out, the other is soon to follow anyways. No sense making two trips.
