I have building a fence and came up with a slick idea for a "H" brace tightener and would like to patent the idea, how do I go about it?

Forget the patent just try to sell it to someone who can make it. It cost to much now to start a new business and the big outfits don't like to buy other peoples stuff. Not what it was a century ago.

I would get a good patent attorney. My dad got a patent years back, and it cost him several thousand then.

My first patent (probably the only one) went through on April 3. I used an attorney, would recommend it, and it was somewhere between $7000 and $10,000. I'm manufacturing and wholesaling the low production run tool myself. I feel sure I will get my money back, hoping for more than just that.

A word of advice, find yourself a VERY GOOD patent attorney first! He or she will be able to get you headed down the right path. A co-worker of mine has 3 to his name. Each patent has cost him $7500.00. To this day he has yet to sell a single one.

Do a search for US patent office and it will get you there
