Turned the yearlings out on grass today.

This little feller has a questionable background heritage, more than likely a reservation inbred throw-back. He's pidgeon-toed, knock-kneed and onery as a schoolboy. Wife got him given to her last Christmas because nobody but nobody in two counties wanted him.

Have half a truckful of money tied up in Vet bills already. :>(

Dunno tho, there is just something about this little guy I like. I really think I can make a fair saddle horse out of this joker if I work with him long enough. :>)

Well, he doesn't look like one you'll ever take to the fair, but might make a fair cow pony. My wife is as good a horse trainer as I have seen, and she does most of it in a round pen. It really works- I've even had some success at it, and I'll never really know what I'm doing around horses.

Allen,
It is truly amazing what running in a circle will do. When I first saddled my horse I run him in a circle and then would try and saddle him. If he did not stand still he would run some more. 2 episodes,on different days, of that, sweat running off of his belly, and he stands still to be saddled. I also found out that it also works for loading in a trailer, although the first time it did take me 2 hours to get him in.

That little fellah has about ayear and a half to two years to become friendly and trusting. He won't be like a wild "bronc", as seen in the movies.

One thing that I think Allen understands, is that you have to be firm, always get your way, and NEVER let the horse win, not even once.

A stubborn horse may take extra work, but once you get them won over, they'll do anything you ask!

The picture doesn't do full justice as to what he will look like, but I/m sure that he'll be fine!

since you like to go off head first maybe you should sneak into locker room at high school and borrow a football helment or 2.

Allan,

In a post awhile back you mentioned that you usually come out of the saddle "head first". Sure hope that won't be the case with this little fella.

That little guy looks like one I would pick. If it was 110 years ago and I was riding the pony exspress or I had some injuns after me I would want that horse under me. Look at them eyes. That hoss is smart in ways you or I couldnt understand.

Allan:
Somehow that back end and front end don't seem to match.
I'm sure you'll get a saddle on it and ride it but I don't know about making what we call a saddle horse out of him. You sure that's a gaited horse?

Poor little fella was within a day of being dead from Shipping Fever when we got him.

Have been doctoring him off and on for this or that ever since. We've had him on some high-powered feed trying to get him caught back up.

He just needs to muscle up to straighten out that conformation. I really do think I can turn this guy into a good cow pony.

Allen,

I've only broke two horses in my life. Both of them broke pretty easily with gentle/firmness. However, when I was a kid I helped a guy break one using brute force. It worked, but I sure didn't like it.

Have you ever seen the John Wayne movie entitled "Cowboys?" I wouldn't endorse it, but I still like the corral scene with the broncs.

Yeah,

I think that bonehead-bending method is just plain dumb.

Horses are just like women. The more time you spend with 'em, the more they respond. :>)

My dad had discernment when it came to horses. Could read them like he was a horse himself. Now this little horse ain't going to let anyone put a saddle on it.

By the looks of that quarter horse rear end, he'll make a fine cow pony. If He keeps that confirmation, he's gonna tun on a dime and give you some change! Just make sure your pointen the same way he's goin!
