My E mail all of a sudden stopped showing up. I got my computor friend to check it out. He found out by getting rid of my fire wall protection I got my E mail to work. I still have my virous protection. So now with only virous protection, my friend says someone can get into my computor and get my information. How do the crooks do this? What protection should I get now? I can take anyone of my tractors apart down the valve caps, but these computors get the best of me. I don't know a ram from a can of spam. Stan

not to be redundant but in a firewall not only do you want to keep stuff out, you want to keep stuff in as it is more important.
Microsofts firewall does not do that and alot of the others also fail on that. Alot of so called firewalls fail leaktests.

It depends on what firewall you are using. My computer used to have Norton, never works, so I switched to Mcafee, works better, or do you have windows firewall? I think you can get it for free on microsoft.com

I'm coming in a little late here and can only guess with my 2 cents worth. Norton and Nero CD burner used to be great programs. Not now. If you have the latest versions of them, get them out of there. They try to take over the whole computer. Windows fire wall I can live with.

ok forget windows firewall. yes it may stop bad coming in but if you already have something windows firewall does nothing on anything going out(your computer to internet).
comodo firewall is free and is rated one of the best comodo.com
zonealarm on of the good ones also has a free version tho not as good as it as been in the past.
Antivirus only works if they know about something and they write the signature in an update otherwise useless.

You could go to a linux based operating system and get rid of windows. Much less virus worries and it"s free.

Hey Chief -

These days most people"s RAM is full of spam! ha...

Was it Norton firewall?? I"ve seen several PC"s lock down when it malfunctions.

Are you running Windows XP?? If so, it has it"s own firewall that is comparable to any of the rest of them. You could turn it on from "control panel".

Personally, I like to turn all the firewall garbage off (it"s just more work for Windows) and use a hardware router/firewall. You can get a Linksys at Walmart these days for $40-$60.

I am running windows xp. The firewall protecton was from my work, They wanted us to install it as they wanted no chance of virous being introduced from a home computor. I was called zone alarm. You say windows has a built in fire wall? Stan

Yes - if you click on 'start', 'control panel', 'security center', and then 'windows firewall', you can turn it on or off.

Or add exceptions if you want specific traffic to be able to pass.

With corporate guys calling the shots, you may not be able to, but if it appears disabling zonea alarm cures the problem, I'd uninstall it.

I've seen several cases of "pieces" of the software still interfere, even when turned off.

You DO need to keep antivirus up and running though.

Howard
