I have a new 5103 JD 50hp and am trying to set up a set of Massy Harris set of 3bottom 12. I tryed to plow with them last night and they didn't work well at all. The points are in good shape and also the mole boards are good and clean.I set the plows leval front to back and side to side. But they would dig to deep and stop the tractor. So I rasied them up and they still was spining the tractor out. I was getting abot 4 to 5 inches deep.I would think this tractor should pull thes plows in circles. Does any body have any ideas.

I have a TO30 Ferguson on the farm that my grandad bought new. The engine is rebuilt to TO35 displacement and the head was milled. Might have 40 hp now. Hooked a set of 3-14 Ford plows to it one day and pulled them in second gear, about 4 mph. (Dad had told me that the Ferguson dealer used to rent the tractor back from grandad to demonstate because it could pull 3 bottoms, so I had to try) It was corn stubble ground (silage) so it was easy plowing but still all she wanted. If I were plowing sod or hard ground, 2 bottoms would probably be all it wanted. Your 5103 probably isnt much more tractor than the hopped up Fergie.

I have a Case LA with over 50 HP drawbar and it weighs in over 8500 with 18.4X30 tires and I have trouble pulling my 3X14 in hard ground. Yes you need more tractor and a lot more weight. These new little tractors are way over powered for their size and weight to do field work, they may be fine for a loader and such but they are not built for farming. Walt

Hi Mark, Your tractor is closer to 40 hp than 50, when you look at the pto rating. It only weight 4475 lbs, you didnt mention if the rear tires were loaded ? When they talk about 15 hp per bottom I bet its light soil, not clay and sod. A two bottom 14" would probly make your life easier.IMHO.

Hi;
Have you got the tractor hydraulics set on depth control which allows the plough to follow the ground at the depth you've set on the lever.
You may have got the hydraulics on position which means the linkage will set the plough depth to whatever place the lever is set, ie lower lever = lower the linkage goes down. Look in your operators manual for correct setting of position & depth lever controls. Hope this helps
Cheers David

Mark that tractor should pull that plow 10" deep with no trouble. You may need some more wt on the rear, but most likely weight on the front. A 3 pt plow transfers its weight and plowing downforce to the tractor, using the rear wheels as the fulcrum point. That is why the wt. is added on the front. Had an 806 Farmall w/5 btm semi mt plow that wouldnt stay in the ground. Put 1000# wt on the front, and made a nice plowing rig. LE

Thanks for the info. This tractor was a frontend loader on it so I can get the weight I need easy.
The other thing I think could be wrong is the plows could be set to far from the inside tire. Do you know how far this should be set?

Mark,

Is this the little tractor you're trying to plow with?

Dunno Pard,

Just don't think you're ever going to be able to pull that off. You've got way more tail than you've got dog.

Just my opinion,

Allan

From the way I understand it you need 1 hp to every inch of plow. My tractor is 50 hp and it should only take a 36 hp tractor to pull them. I have the hp it doesn't lack there. I just spin out when they sink in the ground to deep.Like I sad earlyer my tire to plow spacing is about 18" shoulden it be around 12" to the first plow.

Your right tractor tire should be hugging the furrow wall and the right edge of the first bottom should be cutting it.

Hi Mark,

You need the horsepower and traction to the ground.

If I were in your shoes, I would pull that loader off. It is robbing ballast from the rear of your tractor and making it lightfooted. Then, I'd either load the tires or hang some weight on the rear.

Also, I'd sure drop a bottom off the plow. There is no way that little tractor is going to pull three bottoms. Their horsepower is measured at the end of the crankshaft and not at the drawbar.

I'm not knocking your tractor; just trying to give you a little insight. It takes some guts to pull a three bottom plow and to do it right.

Heck, those old, heavy, low-geared As would only pull 2 12s.

Hope you get it figured out,

Allan

5103 weighs about 4500 pounds. Without loading the tires and adding some weights you're not going to get there.

Last night I set the plows closer to the tractor took of the front end loader and set the 3 point so it could not sway back and froth alos set the rock shaft controls. So I took the plows out to a sod field and they work great. Thanks for all the help.
