I've got problems with my Honda Rancher's electric shift..... soon as it warms up, it quits shifting. I'd like to find a website where I could find some answers on how to trace the problem and a likely fix. Know any good ones to try?

The ES models should also come with a manual shift lever you can use in case the ES goes bad. Might be in the tool box, you'll have to install it.

ej3b,

yep..... .if it weren't for that, I'd be walking. Evidently, Honda knew the ES would crap out sooner or later..hehe!

Mark, how is the battery in your Rancher? The ES system requires a good battery to function. Although there may be other problems. I am also learning about the ES.

well..... .the battery appears good, never fails to start the machine and I would think once the engine is running and producing a charge....the battery would then be a moot point? Even yet, when the machine is dead cold...like sitting overnight, when I go to start it, it will shift into neutral just fine. After starting, I can then shift to reverse, back out of the garage and then shift into forward and maybe make it through all the gears before it refuses to shift anymore.

I know of a good ATV board
but this site won't let me post the address.
You can email me and I will send it to you.

I just got my 4 wheeler about 2 weeks ago
and they have been as helpful as the people here.

Mark: I have a 2005 Rancher ES and there was a recall on the shift sensor. Supposed to carry back to dealer to get replaced.

rodger,

mine is a 2002....don't know if that year fell under the recall or not. Sure as I carried mine back, they'd tell me no....but for a measly $200 they can fix it..... hehe! Maybe I ought to trade mine back in..... ....it's got all of 1200 miles on it:).

Thanks everybody for your responses....I'll check out the websites.....I think it should be an easy fix.

Knock on wood.....I think I fixed it:)!

I yanked the fuses....they all seemed fine, but I changed them anyway and now the ES goes clickity-clickity like it's supposed to! Maybe a loose contact or ? Whatever it was...it appears to be working fine now.

Might try atvmag.com. THey have a "ask the expert" section. No where near as good as this site though. Fortunately my rancher es has never given any problems.
Good luck.
