Well last night after work I planted a little sweet corn. Used to figure if I planted on my mother's birthday (4/26) I would have corn for my sister's birthday (7/18). With warmer weather maybe a little sooner. Some guys around here planting under clear plastic get it before July 1st.

On another topic from an earlier post concerning off farm jobs to be able to farm. It seems that just about all the farmers I know have some outside income source in the family. Mostly to provide health benefits in addition to the money. In about a year I'll be able to retire from this job if I think I can afford it. My retirement will cut my off farm income in half and I will still need to buy insurance. At least I have enough years in that I can still pick up insurance for myself and my wife reasonably. I'm hoping that having more time on the farm will allow me to extend my seasons somewhat and increase income. My wife just wants me around more to help in late August and September when I return to this job and all the harvesting and marketing become her responsibility. We'll see.
Phil

Nice planter, what model is it? What do they run cost wise. We get 80% of our income off our poultry house, wife works out in medical administration feild. Her benifits are great for her, but not the children and I . I buy insurance through Blue Cfoss Blue Sheild, Costs me $400/ month thats with a $2600 deductible and 80/20 after that. My barns ties me down for about 4-6 hours a day. I am also considering getting back into the some sort of career as well, but what? I have do do more than I do a day, I am starting to get fat and bored. Can only help freinds and neighbors so much, then that recreational work is done as well.

A company in Eastern PA makes the planter using John Deere 700x units. 2 row model set up like this with fertilizer, and insecticide boxes runs around $5000.
It does a nice job of planting with good depth control and seed spacing. This one uses the finger pickups but you can also get the vacuum seeder units on them. Only problem is that with some of the small sweet corn seed you can get some double seed drop. I used to have a ford 309 planter. the only depth control was the tractors 3 pt hitch. On hillsides one row wuld be sitting on top of the ground and the other 3" deep. I got tired of going along with a hoe and covering seed that wasn't planted so I bought this unit about 8 or more years ago.

I'm doing the same thing.Work 3-11 in the shop and try to do the farming in the mornings and on the weekends.Pretty hectic with a 4 year old running around.Good to see somebody has some corn in.Been laid up for a couple of weeks and am chomping at the bit to get something done.Nice planter by the way.Looked at them a couple of times, but don't have one yet.
