Hey guys, just called the phone company today to upgrade to DSL and finally get rid of this slooooow dialup connection. In the process I discovered they had made some changes in their calling plans. Long story short I got way more features on both my lines than I ever had or will ever use, and in the process the bill dropped by $11. The to top it off by getting the "extra features" it turned it into a "bundled" service which dropped the standard price of the DSL by $5. In the end I wind up with extra phone features, and a DSL connection for only $4 a month more than I'm paying now. So, my point is the phone companies are always changing their service plans and nowdays are getting cheaper and adding features to keep up with the wireless carriers. Thing is they aren't gonna call you to tell you the've got a better, as well as cheaper, plan and they can't legally change you to the better plan without your say so. So if you haven't called your phone carrier lately give them a call, it might save you some money. By the way my service is through CTC. Hopefully this will save some of ya'll a little cash each month. I know every little bit helps.

I learned the hard way you have to keep an eye on that phone bill, I was getting $14.95 charge something I never heard of turned out to be some website I was on had slammed me. It took a 3 way call between me and my phone company and the slammer to get my money back.
So i decided to go big time and get Sat for my computer No DSL way out here in no mans land.
My first phone bill was not bad $92 including the new cell phones an dropping that extra line. then the next one was $175 I went crazy. It took 2 hours on the phone to get to someone who looked at the bill and said sorry you don't owe that $63 its a mistake that we made. Boy you really have to keep an eye on these people.

Well I hope it works out for you,my company is embarq and they tried this trick on me about 6 or 7 months ago. When I got my first bill it was actually up about $12 from the previous bill. I got on the phone and raise he!!. Finally got everything back down and now my dsl runs about 34.99 a month and basic phone service about $12.99,but with all the taxes and this and that I end up paying from $65 to $70 a month. Actually cheaper than it was 3 years ago. Wait until after you're bill for an entire month and report back.

Hey Rich, I have embarq as well and from what I have seen, their plans have a lot of conditions and special circumatances that will make one end up spending much more than one would think. How is DSL taxed? If it is like the regular bill, It will be 30 to 40% of the cost.

Last year I got lots of mail ffrom Verizon on the new service. Bundle everything together for a great price. Of course, since I live 15 miles from any town, DSL is not available and the cable co. is called Kudzu Cable (go figure) and will never install fast service, I ccannot get DSL from anybody. But the phone company promised un;imited long distance and all the other service, (call waiting, voice mail, caller ID etc.) at a special low price of 44.95. WOW!!! I bit. first bill 48$. Next bill 52$ now it is up to 60$. Price changes every couple of month.Last bill included a flyer telling me how wonderful my phone service is. Expect another price hike this month.

I'm at work now, when I get home I'll get the statement out and list all those funny charges. My dsl use to be about 49.99 a month for the hi-speed until I told them that one of the employees lied to me about saving money. And another thing, I never get credit when the service is down. When I shell out money for a service,I expect it to be right.

A couple of years ago, I called the phone company and asked about DSL. The lady on the other end said "yessir and did you want to sign up today?" I was really wanting high speed, so I said yes. "I will send the router out right away."

Couple of days later the router arrived and I set it all up (so far so good).

The anxiously awaited day to have it turned on came and it didn't happen. Late in the afternoon I called and the man on the other end said "DSL is not available at your house".

I was pretty upset, as we figured out how I was to get the router returned. All was forgotten until I recieved my next phone bill. On the bill was a charge of over $700 for early cancellation of my DSL contract. It was a race between me and the wife to see who could get to the phone first. Turned out they had already credited my account with the overcharge.

How funny it is, they save you $11 a monthand yet your bill is only $4 a month higher for all those services. Not making fun or anything like that, I have been doing the same thing for years.
just thought I would point that out. Rick

Thanks Wayne, I will be upgrading to DSL very soon. Here in TN this weekend we are having a tax free weekend for school supplies, including PC up to $1500. I plan on buying or ordering one this weekend and after I have it set up I will upgrade my service. I do most of my Internet stuff at work so it has not been a real big issue for me. Thanks...
