what is the best ground for potatos. everything i have is new sod i turned over roto tilled. i have 3 bushel to put in. some of the ground is more clay than others but is dryer. little rockier but not too bad . when i go to run the digger dryer is probably better. some of the ground is pretty nice loamy.but has wet spots.didnt know how well they would do in heavier clay ground.

Someday someone has to explain that Michigan thing to me. In my area of New York, the soil has to be pretty acidic or the potatoes get real scabby. General practice here is to plow new land that was previously scrub - for potatoes. Pasture that's been limed doesn't work - nor does any other cropland. But - I got to Posen, Michigan every year for their potato festival. It's potato farming comunity - mostly all Polish farmers. And the soil is sand and lime. And, their potatos seem to grow. So how come it works there, but not here?

Potatoes (at least in the Snake River Plain) don't like "wet feet". If you've got wet spots, you may see more rot, etc. in the crop.

For processing potatoes, EVERYONE uses sprinklers to reduce puddling from irrigation.

You should be fine on new ground.

I agree with Coup,

New ground or first year out of alfalfa really lays 'em on there.
