On my 80 ford There are two struts that go from the axle about 2 ft back and have rubber bushings on the ends, and are secured by a large washer, and nut. If I want to replace the rubber bushings is this a big job? Might get my tractor hauler running before my weed mowing season after all.
Stan

Loosen the spring mounts on each side under the hood (on top of the springs) just loosen them to give them enough slack to move a little, then take the nuts off of the backs of the radius arms. Laying down behind the axle, take your foot and give the axles a good kick foward, The radius arm should pop right out and let you put your bushing in.

Can be easy enough
Or
Can be a pain
especialy if the radius rod breaks. I have done this before.

I guess I need to know if the strut needs to come completely off, or can it be pulled forward enough to replace the bushings. I don't have a rust problem. Stan

I've done them a few times, common repair on older twin I beam suspension. You can pull it forward, but you will fight it the whole way. And, you're working around a big chunk of steel onder tension. Kinda like a recipie for an ER visit. An easier way is to jack and block the frame up, remove the tire, put a jack under the spindle to relieve the spring tension, and grind the rivet heads off that hold the radius arm brackets to the frame. Use a punch and a big hammer to knock out the rivets. Then just remove the bracket and replace the bushings. Use grade 8 7/16" bolts, washers, and lock nuts to reattach the brackets. Or, drill out the holes and use 1/2" bolts for the extra piece of mind. I've done a few like this, and never had any problems.

Not a bad job just a little time consuming, and
You'll want a 3/4" drive ratchet or a good impact wrench, and a strong buddy wouldn't hurt either.
