OT why different CDL,'s A,B,C,D,etc ???

I'm looking at doing some delivery jobs w/ 1 ton dually Dodge & 25ft gooseneck 14000# rating. If I'm under 26000# gross, would I even need a CDL? I'm in Okla and would pull surronding states Thanks Jerry Castleberry Claremore OK

First you have to realize that the federal laws governing trucks come from 2 points of view. A lot of people get them confused causing many misunderstandings.

The first set of laws that govern dot #'s; insurance; and anything else to do with the truck are enforced against the truck owner. These laws start with any truck that has a GVWR of 10,000 lbs or more.

The second set of laws affect the driver and it does not matter if he owns the truck or not. This is the cdl laws. Since your trailer is rated over 10,000 lbs you would need a class A cdl. These laws start at 26,001 lbs unless you meet class C definition.

Classes of License:

The Federal standard requires States to issue a CDL to drivers according to the following license classifications:

Class A -- Any combination of vehicles with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds provided the GVWR of the vehicle(s) being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.

Class B -- Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing a vehicle not in excess of 10,000 pounds GVWR.

Class C -- Any single vehicle, or combination of vehicles, that does not meet the definition of Class A or Class B, but is either designed to transport 16 or more passengers, including the driver, or is placarded for hazardous materials.

You have come to the proper conclusion. Sounds like you need some face to face advice from local authorities. Don't forget your insurance agent, he could put a damper on a fledgling business plan in a hurry.

Class C is for single vehicles up to 26,000 lbs. Class B is for any single vehicle of any weight. Class A is for multi vehicle combinations.

From section 393.5 of federal code:

FEDERAL DEFINITION OF COMMERCIAL MOTOR VEHICLE means any self-propelled or towed vehicle used on public highways in INTERSTATE COMMERCE to transport passengers or property when:

a) The vehicle has a gross weight rating or combined gross weight rating of 10,001 or more pounds; or

b) is a bus; or

c) transports hazardous material requiring placarding.

As long as you stay in Oklahoma, state law determines what you need. As soon as you cross a state line the above definitions apply.

CDL is a federal law. jawl10 is the closest to the correct answer. More importantly, if you are going to cross state lines you need to get familiar with the FMCSA regulations.

The key to what you are doing is your trailer is over 10,000# and you will be crossing state lines. You should also check with your state DMV and your insurance agent. With a CDL you also need a current medical card and be enrolled in a drug testing program.

Unless of course you are gonna be one of them outlaw truckers, then you don't have to do nothing.

Here in Oregon , If its a straight truck 26,000 lbs or less and no air or liquid tank you are ok without, but if pulling a trailer with over 10,000 gross weight you need a cdl with medical card....James

Class b cdl is good for everything but Doubles or pulling a trailer with a truck rated at over 26,000 lbs....James

Form what I understand, when I can finally get the 1 ton truck I want with a nice heavy gooseneck or pintle hitch, I'll need a class A? It'll be a good long while, but I still have my dreams and my brother just got a 2003 F350 this winter that has a gooseneck hitch in back, just not a trailer yet. I may have to borrow his once in a while and let him drive dad's old 88 F150...

If you are hauling for hire you have to have a CDL no matter what the vehicle, van, pickup, truck, the weight makes no difference.

In most states you will need a CDL if the trailer you are towing is over 10,000 lbs even if the truck and trailer are under 26,000 lbs total. You will also need a dot health card and a Dot number to go interstate. Check with your Secretary of States office.

Here if your 26,000 and under you do'nt need a cdl unless the truck has air brakes OR tandem axles But if you work for a company and go out of state You need to have a medical card (physical,etc)
