Skidsteer or Crawler

Just bought an eighty. Needs cleaned up alittle. I need to pull fence, clear a few trees from CRP field edge, dig a big hole for junk, clear a trail thru the timber {mostly multi-flower rose}, load unto a trailer for scrap some old equipment such as balers, plows, and old pull type combine, and maybe build a couple of small ponds mainly for frogs. But in a couple of years may decide to build a bigger one for fishing {2 or so acres}. What should I get---a skidsteer or crawler with a 4 in 1 bucket? I've run a small crawler for years--but not a skidsteer. Thinking of something along the line of a JD 350 crawler. Not sure what to get in regards to skid steer. Would like to hear your ideas. Thanks

Get a larger Skid steer with tracks it will do everything you want might take a while to builds that 2 acre pound get a good set of track I like loegering tracks and prefer either case 90XT,450 or bobcat 863 they are they nicest and fastest to run and I have used them all.

Make SURE it has tracks,if it doesn't,you'll be stuck in wet grass! In my opinion a skid steer is worthless off of cement.

A bigger skid steer will do circles around a JD 350 for most jobs. A crawler will do more heavy pushing and lift a lot more. 4 in 1 buckets are over rated in my opinion. If your working around branches the hoses get caught fairly regularly. Tracks on a skid steer do help in softer ground but can cause axle problems if driving over trees and stumps and stuff because it puts extra stress on the axles because when driving over something between the tires, the tracks transfer a pull on the axles. A 2 acre pond is pretty big for either machine. A skid steer is way more versatile and cheaper to maintain. Most skid steers are pretty good machines. If you decide to get one make sure you can see the bucket cutting edge when it's flat on the ground and your in the seat. Some machines like older New Holland and JD you sat too low and as a result you couldn't do nearly as fast or as nice a job. I have both and the skid steer is my choice except if I'm in real soft ground or doing heavy pushing. My Cat has a backhoe that I use for digging ponds and drainage trenches. It is faster than digging with either machine. My skid steer is a 1300 lb. rated machine. It sounds like you would want to look at a little bigger size like a 1700 lb. or higher rated like an 1845 or 853 (843) Bobcat or other similar machine. Skid steers do an amazing job but can be very dangerous in the wrong hands and take several hours or weeks to get comfortable on. Hope this helps. Dave

I'd get a skid steer, decent size say an 1845C Case (65 hp) and a set of tracks with it. It will do ll the small stuff and root out trees bigger than you want to (you can get ahold of a root ball bigger than it is in 30 mins digging). Then, when its time for the bigger jobs rent a dozer. Less than $1500 a week gets me a new 550 ot 650 Deere from Hertz, delivered and picked up.
