I just bought a 2004 790 through a private sale. It has the loaded R4 tires and 300 loader. It has 150 hours on it. I don't know much about these other than posts on forums like these due to growing up on an IH farm with larger tractors. Plus it seems as though they hold their value better than most of the other compacts out there in its class. The guy I bought it from said it was a repo from a bank. He threw in a 5ft JD rotary mower that he said had came with it. Well, the mower looks as though it would have been new around 2004 when the tractor was sold. However, it has been ran through the ringer. I mean it is beat so bad there is a cirle on top of the deck from the blades touching the top of the mower. The only thing left good on the mower is the gear box. I paid under $10k for the package and am wondering if I should turn around and sell it for a small profit. I am a little leary of what type of abuse the overall tractor got due to the looks of the mower. The tractor still looks great but and the loader is definately used but, not too bad other than some scratches and scrapes. Cutting edge is still in very good shape. What would you do? I love using the tractor and it seems to run and operate like new.

I don't think you got much room to make a profit ? That's about what they are worth ? They are real good tractors so you may as well use it.

I have a 770 which is basically the same tractor as the 790 with a few less HP. I have had mine for 16 years and the only thing I ever had to replace other than filters and fluids was the battery. I once asked a friend of mine who worked at a JD Dealer how they were to work on. He said "I couldn't tell you. Once we sell them, the never come back." In my opinion, I wish a lot of the other products I've paid good money for were as reliable as that little tractor. As for the mower, you could take a brand new out, hit a hidden stump or rock and end up with that same circular pattern in the mower deck. Those mowers either have a shear pin or a slip clutch on them to keep any sudden impacts like that from harming the PTO. I wouldn't worry to much about it damaging the tractor.

I have a 1988 750, predecessor to the 790. (750-770-790).

I bought a 5' Woods Dixie Cutter rotary mower when I bought the tractor, and I have beat that mower plumb to death. The deck is so brittle I can't even weld it any more, and the gearbox is so worn out it'll barely hold grease, much less gear oil.

Hasn't hurt the tractor a bit. The only money I've put in that tractor since new is one battery, one rebuild kit in the rockshaft, and one transmission-to-rearend gasket. The rockshaft and gasket were due to using a 3ph-mounted backhoe, and I mean using it HARD!

The point of all the foregoing is that the 790 is one of the best compact utilites ever built, and wearing out a rotary mower wouldn't even break a sweat on it. If you like it, keep it! You won't be sorry, IMHO.

Thank you for your thoughts. That makes me feel much better. I hate the thought of getting rid of it and finding another.
