I have a "97 Dodge Ram 1500 4x4 and I have been hearing this click click click click noise echoing off houses as I drive down the road. It happens when I let off the gas pedal and coast down hill or on level ground. I want to say it is coming from up front but not sure. I tried 4WD and I swore the noise stopped. Any ideas?

Hi

Looks like the front axle universal joints are
worn and loose (the joints near the wheels).

My 2¢

I have a 1999 Dodge 1500 4x4 myself. It's doing the same plus I can hear it "squeaking" until I put on the brake etc. If I put it in 4 wheel it'll "pop" if I turn hard left or right. I know it's my front axle u-joints.
I've been putting it off for the last couple hundred miles as I haven't needed the 4 wheel and I'm driving it so infrequently. I've got one trip to make across town this weekend (about 100 miles r/t) and then I think I'll pull the axles and get to it. My truck has 130K.

Your describing the same so no doubt like the other guys said yours are bad to. Get the greasable ones when you go to replace them.

When you go to pull the axles jack up the entire front of the truck and place on jackstands, remove the brakes and hang them on the frame, remove the brake caliper and remove the rotor, Loosen but do not cmpletely remove the castle nut on the axleshaft, remove the 3 bots holding the bearing carrier. Place a large socket between the finger on the ujoint and the Axle tube. start the truck and gently rock the steering wheel so that the ujoint finger pushes against the socket and axle tube. The bearing carrier will push out of its mount. MUCH EASIER THAN BEATING WITH HAMMER LIKE MY DEALER DID AND THE CHILTONS SAYS TO DO.
I got this method from a dealer mechanic and I've used it with great results.

REMEMBER NOT TO STEP ON THE BRAKES WHEN YOU START THE TRUCK.
