Does anyone know how I could get a little more HP out of my 875 versatile? I have heard that using a straight pipe instead of a muffler will give me 30 HP. I think I would just like to turn the fuel up a little though. Anybody have any experience with this?

On the "axle breaking" issue, some folks might have been talking about the mounting bolts that tie the axle to the frame.

On my 895, they were much heavier flanges than two of my friends 875's. One of them (that pulled the heck out of his tractor) had trouble with a bolt cracking (I think there are 4 per mounting surface) and then the remaining bolt(s) cracked the mounting flange cast in the axle.

Probably wouldn't hurt to turn the motor up some reasonable amount and just watch those mount bolts closely.

Yep, on the throttel shaft there is a hole and if ya look in the end there is a Ball bearing , Now if that ball is not the hardened one that SOME pump people install you can drill that ball and using a slide hammer and a small screw turned into the hole slide that ball out and there will be a screw behind it . Better make sure that ya got a pyrometer on the old girl and figure out where the prob is installed in the manifold if it is BEFORE the turbo then 1150-1250 max if it After the turbo then 850-950 max EGT. About a half turn will put some fire in her bonett. Also running the overhead is another thing that SHOULD be done . Now with out knoweing if it is a Small Cam or a BIG cam engine i can not tell ya the injector settings . And there is two ways of doing that . Changing turbos and a few other things can be done with the old 855's Swappen out the torque spring in the pump adding a few shims in the back changing the BUTTON swappen out the injectors . Putting on the new style exhaust manifold if it does not have the new style . changen cam timing , the list goes on . BTDT.

Turn up the pump. That's pretty common practice with these machines. The tractor will take it. Be sensible about it though, don't try to make an 1150 out of it. It wouild be good to find someone who knows these tractors like a dealer or mechanic who has worked on them. The 875 was one of the best 4WD's ever built by anyone including Versatile. They are known to break axle housings on occassion but my understanding that usually results from some abnormal circumstance or extra heavy loads on the 3PT. Many of these tractors have been turned up.

I just talked to a guy that said it was pretty common for them to be turned up. He mentiond that a ball had to be removed on the outside of the pump and under it was a screw that you could turn a quarter turn counter clockwise. If this had already been done he suggested taking it to a diesel shop to be rebuilt and set to the max.

Talk to your Cummins dealer, armed with the "CPL" (Control Parts List) off of the engine nameplate.

They can tell you what HP increase is "safe" wthout major engine component changes.
