I have a tractor that needs painting. The paint is faded but the metal is not rusty. Can this tractor be painted without removing all the old paint by sand blasting? This is not for show only to make it look better and protect the metal from rusting. What would be the best method to paint over an old tractor? Would you have to prime the area to be painted? Thanks!!

Here is another option. If you have intact but faded paint you can compound it with a buffer (on the tin parts) or wet sand with 600 grit to take off the faded surface of the old paint and clear coat. The faded paint is most likely not faded clear through just on the surface. On the engine and such you will probably need to degrease and spray it with a paint blender to soften the old paint slightly and shoot it with new.

Every body is going to give you a different idea on what to do. There is a paint and body forum on this sight. The main thing is you can't paint over grease.I paint my equipement to make it look good, plus protcet the metal. My tractors work for a living, and they will get scratched. I just painted my mower. I bought some degreaser from Home Depot (purple stuf) brush it on and wash off with water. I picked up these sanding pads and gave it a light sanding ot knock off the crusty rust. I didn't use a primer, but it would be good to. atleast on the bare metal. Then I have sand blasted sanded, and primed with laquor primer, filled all the chips, sanded and primed some more, This can go on for ever. Then I took my shinny tractor and just got it scratched up. Unkess you are going to make your tracor a barn queen don't wast a lot of time filling every chip, and scratch. I used frazee aero plate gloss enemal. Just my opinion Stan

Note: If the general painted areas are not rusty, they can be sanded with #220 wet-or-dry sandpaper. Any rust must be sanded as smooth as possible, but if it is pitted, you must use a filler on those areas. I use plastic filler with hardener. when cured, sand it smooth, feather-edge the edges, and prime it with 3-4 coats of automotive primer. Any small pits in the metal, you can use an automotive type of spot putty, or use a filler/primer first. No need to sand-blast the entire sheet metal areas, if not rust pitted! Blasting the light sheet metal might warp the panels! Yes, it will warp the sheet metal! Ask me how i know!! Read back thru the posts--you'll find a wealth of info, especially from CNKS, and others. Go by what they say! They are very good at giving the correct info! Rusty
