Something strange was just happening at my house. Sitting here in the kitchen on the computer at 11 on sunday and looking out the window to the farm yard... 2 maybe 3 turkey vultures were circling over me, sometimes swooping very close to the peaks of buildings and close enough for me to see the ugly red heads. I can't think of anything they'd be interested in here. I watched them for a good five minutes but they seem to have left now. It's a gorgeous blue sky day, you'd think they'd have a better place to hang out than here. Any one else had this happen?

Could have been looking for or using thermals to gain altitude. If your roofs and or yard are black or dark colored, they will heat up and create thermals faster than a green or light brown (dead grass) field.

They are migratory birds. Sometimes as many as 50 work their way over the place. I always tell anyone around "don't stand still too long".

I saw on a wildlife program that there had never been a death diagnosis of these birds that wasn't related to accident or old age. They never die from sickness!

I was just mentioning in the coffee shop this morning that I hadn't seen any buzzards yet,or crows for that matter here in Mid Michigan. There is afterbirth out in the pasture that has been there 10 days or so.

Funny, I've been seeing them for weeks here in central MIchigan. Like to roost on the old barn hulk across the road. See 'em circling very often. Unnerving when you're out plowing, disking, etc.

As far as crows, had them all winter long. Drove up to East Jordan (northern lower pennisula) Friday. Crows all over the place. Cleaning up all the road kill from over the winter, I'm sure.

my grampa has around 80-120 roost in his woods every year for the last 10 years or so.. a few more show up every spring.. dunno why they like his woods so much.. but he loves too watch them.. they may not be pretty but they sure are neat.

Maybe I am crazy but I love to just sit and watch them fly they are by far one of the best designed flying machines in the world.
Once when I was very young I saw one catch a thermal on a hot day and ride it from about 10 feet off the ground to clear out of site without ever flapping a wing. And as one said they do a great job of keeping the road kill and other dead things cleaned up around the farm.
They have been protected for more years than can remember just about the first animal that was ever put on the protected list.
Walt looking out over the farm on beautiful day.

Great photo! I'm curious where it was taken. In northern New England or Blue Ridge mountains of Virginia?

They may have just been playing. They're carrion eaters and will not harm humans or pets. They do have a powerful sense of smell that can detect, among other things, mercapton, a gas produced at the very beginning of decay of a corpse. Their stomach acids are so strong that they kill any bacteria or disease organisms in the road kill they eat so they are beneficial in that way. If they roost or nest in a place where you don't want them, get a device from Contech that shoots a stream of water wherever you direct it whenever motion is detected. They call it "scarecrow".

If they can detect mercaptans I wonder if they can detect a propane or natrual gas leak?

I'm sure they can but they can probably differentiate what's good (to them) to eat versus what's not.

I have 16 of them nesting in the woods just to the north of me. By fall there will be 30 of the bogers. They like to warm up on the roof of my shop in the morning. i am going to try to drive them away this year. Trouble is there is lots of road kill in this area.

They are federally protected. Under the 1918 migratory bird act.

Yes they are on a protected list - at least in OH. Don't ask how they got on it. We seem to have a big problem protecting predators in this country, especially the worthless kind.

Maybe looking for a nesting area? There is a pair that have nested in the haymow of a small (empty) barn near here for the last two years. A word of caution, if you get too close their defense is to puke on you. No, I didnt find out first hand, but judging from what they eat I wouldnt want to.

Do you have livestock ? They will attack a calf or a disabled animal and pick their eyes out. If you have livestock keep on a guard on these birds.
