First of all, a true Highboy has a narrower frame than other Ford 4x4's. It measures 34 inches at theoutside of the rails. A nother way to tell is that there is a crossmember at the very front that looks like a plate just below the front bumper. Ford quit making them in mid-year 1977. They also have BIG diameter hub ends on the front axle. They do not taper down loke the newer trucks. they look like the ones found on 70-72 Chevy 3/4 ton trucks. Some true hi-boy parts are gettting hard to find and expensive. I like the 78-79 much better.

1979 F-250 is chosen as one of the top 10 4x4's of all time by the 4x4 magazines year after year.
Not sure if it had the Dana 44 in the front but the F-350 had the awsome 60 that still feches $1000 bucks for just the front end. It's got to be the Ford front 60 from that era.

My brother has a 74 highboy that he bought new. That truck was one tough truck and would go a lot of places. It made me a believer. But as others have said its steering was not great. It had the divorce mounted transfercase with a 4 speed. That had granny gear in it. It also had the dana 60 front and rear.(4.10) It got rearened by a semi and still sits out in the grove today. I just hate to see its parts go to waste.

Early 77's were highboy's, later one's were not. I had a stock 76 F250 4x4 which was considered a "highboy" and had 35's with plenty of room. However, I personally would not buy another one. They had terrible steering and an extra driveshaft which means 2 more u-joints to replace and that many more places to develop vibration. That being said, the price seems reasonable even for a parts truck especially if it really has a dana 60 front end $$$$. Most (including mine) had a dana 44 w/reverse cut gears and large dana 60 looking hubs (I was told the large hubs were part of a "snowplow package"). Some people just look at the hubs and assume the axle is a 60, but it's not.

I totally agree with everything you said kodg. The high boy trucks were a PITA. MIne looked really good but it was a money and maintenence pit. Mine was a 1976 that had the big hubs in the front but had a dana 44. I have never had any problems with any dana 44 in the front of one. My f-350 has a dana 60 in the front but I don't see what all the hype is with them. I would recommend not buying the 77. It is not the high boy anyway. It is actually better that it is not. They only have two drivshafts and not the three and the transfer case is probably hooked to the back of the trans which is also better than the hi boy. I would find a late 80's early 90's F-350. They sit higher than the hi boys and everything about them is a better design.
