The Mom wants a self-propelled mower for her place. I’ve been tasked to come up with a recommendation. Anyone got any advice? I figure a front-drive one would be best, for ease of working around trees and such.

I’ve looked at Poulan and Craftsman, but they both have plastic gears to drive the front wheels, and it seems like those would strip out easily. I was thinking I might get a Toro, since I’ve had decent luck with their riding mowers.

Thoughts?

Have a Scott mower. Has the jumping Deere on the hub caps.

My experience with lawn boys is no start.

HIGHLY recommend the Toro, with the pace setter self propelled. I have one and it is nice! Greg

Toro is the best. My dad and I had 30 yards we use to mow all we had was toro. We have one now that is 12 years old and its still going grate.

What's that thing you've got going when you type an apostrophe? Sort of looks like "the artist formerly known as Prince", but I didn't know he was trademarked. Very interesting. BTW, I've had a 7HP Poulan for the past 3 years- front drive, and I really like the variable speed self- propelling feature. Haven't had any trouble with the mechanism yet- knock on wood.

Look at the Honda with the hydro drive or the Toro with the pace setter drive. These were the recommendations from a Sears’s salesman once he found out I lived just down the road from him. The salesman said that the plastic gears in the Craftsman are its weak point and will fail prematurely.

Two years ago the Wife and I got a new Lawn Boy with the "sense 'a speed" self propelled drive system. I love this mower. Starts great, is reasonably lightweight, powerful and moves at YOUR pace. Best $400. I've spent in a loooong time!

About 4 years ago, I picked up a 1998 Lawn-Boy 6.5 HP rear wheel drive 2-stroke mower for $20 at a garage sale. The prior owner could not seem to get it running right. After taking apart the "plastic" carburetor 3 times and going thru it with a fine tooth comb, I got it running. It has been running perfectly ever since and is by far the best mower I have ever owned. Very, Very powerful! The rear wheel drive speed is adjusted by simply putting more pressure on the drive handle which puts more tension on the little V-belt. Despite this inherent "slippage" the belt still looks like new. I have a lot of steep banks to mow and the traction of the rear wheel drive is amazing. Another plus for the 2-stroke engine is the full lubrication no matter how steep an angle the mower is operating at. I use nothing but Lawn-Boy's own "low-ash" two-stroke oil and despite extreme heavy duty usage, I see no difference in performance over the past 3 full seasons of use. Great mower; great buy!

Get a rear drive model that has different speeds you can select how fast you want to go. Those front drives wear out tires and don't go up hills very well. My mom has been using Lawnboy's and had good luck with them. I don't think it has adjustable speeds ? I like the 5 speed on my John Deere.

I like the Ariens due to ease of operation and the rear wheel drive. The drive is easy to maintain and not many parts in the drive. I bought mine after using my Moms. Another suggestion might be to go to a lawn mower repair place and see what they fix and what they throw in the dumpster.
