I am having trouble with my brakes on an 88 Chevy C3500. The antilock system must be bad as the brakes pulse terrible. Has any one bypassed the antilock brakes on one of these trucks? Just wondering if anybody else has had this problem.

Thanks for the help

if it a 88 c3500 it would be a 73 to 90 body type which did not have anti lock brakes. so i would turn drums and rotors,or replace them and in stall new pads.1990-3500 (which i call to new body type) was first to have rear antilock brakes.

Common problem with newer chevey trucks. On mt "99 , I believe we simply pulled the fuse. No more anti-lock brakes once fuse is pulled. Anti-lock brake problems gone. Light stays on at dash.

After replying the first time , I continued down through , reading the other replies. Hoosier JD is on the money. Very common. GM had a recall on this problem. Check it out. You may be covered.

Most anti brake lock problems are low spongy petal, I spec it has only rear anti lock brakes. I have by passed a few of the rear only set ups and it has werked out quite well. So to answer yer ?, You will have to make a line to by pass the rear dump valve that sits rite below the master cylinder. I cut the fit'ns off the line that goes to the dump valve and with a double flaring tool re fit the old fit'ns to the new line and by pass the dump valve. BTW also werks on fords wif rear only anti lock. another thing I do izz on a 3/4 to 1 ton chebby I only use OEM rear shoes or Bendix, no other brand. I have found that the other brands are tow aggressive and lock up to early and will affect the anti lock operation. It could also make it seam as if the brake pedal pulsates. To test its simple, unplug the anti lock controller or remove the fuse. another problem with the brakes pulsating izz (you are enny one else ain't gonna believe this) the rear brakes are adjusted to thigh. Adjust the rears up to lock'em and back off 30 clicks. It could also B the front rotors are out of round and the most common cause of a pulsating petal.

The antilock brake system on the older Chevys only works on the rear brakes. It seems unlikely that the antilock system is causing your problem because you really have to mash down on the brakes before the antilock system will kick in.

If it is the antilock system, replacement rebuilt unloader valves for these vehicles are not terribly expensive. I had to buy one after my son put power steering fluid in the brake reservoir. The unloader valve is about the only part of the antilock system that can fail.

One last thing: The antilock brake computer drives the speedometer. You'll probably want to leave the computer installed if you do rip out the rest of the antilock system.

My cousin had the same problem with his '97 2500. He did have them bypassed.

Sounds like warped rotors to me. I've even seen 'em pulse with bad drums on the rear too.

A little over a year ago, I had what sounded like your trouble on my 98 Tahoe. It was time for brakes anyway, I had over 60,000 on them, so I replaced the pads and bought the good rotors. I still had the problem. I got to thinking, I had never felt rotors do what these were doing... it would vibrate and/or pulsate real slow. I got on this site and asked, someone told me to take everything back apart because there is a sensor behind the rotor and a backing plate. This sensor gets corrosion (road gunk and rust?) and will make the anti-locks pulsate. Just clean the end of this sensor and put a little-thin amount of synthetic grease on it. I couldn't get to it right away, so I pulled the fuse until I could. The brakes went back to the old style, no anti-locks, but worked just fine. Later, I went in and pulled everthing back apart and did what was suggested and fixed it! Don't know if this is the cure for your truck, but it fixed mine. As a side note....thanks to everyone on this and the John Deere site who has helped me on several problems I have had...I can't buy this kind of help anywhere else! Later, Mike.
