The 1210 usually doesn't smoke on startup much unless it's really cold and the glow plugs don't work. First thing to do is make sure that the glow plugs work then, use them and it should start up in a couple seconds.

When a diesel starts up cold, it will always smoke. Thats just the nature of the beast. Since diesel engines use compression and not electric spark to fire, the fuel won't get completely burned in the cylinders until it get warmed up a little.

Yup, pretty normal stuff for any diesel. I just started up our Oliver 1855 after letting it sit all winter adn she puffed a little bit of smoke and a bunch of carbon chunks came out the muffler, then it cleared up for the most part. That one likes to smoke a little even after eing warmed up. Just the nature of the beast.

Very common when they don't start right up. Shoot even a brand new engine will do that if it spins over much before it starts, all that happening is the diesel fuel that didn't burn is now burning off thats also why in a short time it stops smokeing

Relatively common. Do you have a preheat coil or glowplugs you are supposed to use a minute before starting? Couple old postings about hard to start/smoky diesels that user was not doing prestart warmup drill. My 350D starts in about 5-10 seconds AFTER a minutes worth of preheat- still gives af smoke puff.
