When the engine is hot and the weather is warm/hot at the same time the glow plug light won't even flash and she won't hit hardly while spinning it over, won't hardly crank period. What would cause this condition,a relay/timer/or something else? The engine was bought new as a replacement and now has 60k on it.It smells of raw diesel when this happens.Cold weather, cold engine, warm engine w/cold outside temereatures starts ok,just hot engine with warm temperatures is a no start. What needs to be replaced or repaired? Thanks for any helpful info.

A bit confused with you post. Are you saying it hardly turns over when hot or hardly fires when hot or both. If just slow turning over probably starter/cable/battery problem. If the glow light doesn't come on it is possible it is the coolant sensor or the pump itself is shot.

Had a similar problem way back when on a 5.7 diesel started fine cold ,but when hot would not start very good. Turned out that the starter had a broken brush holder or spring ? and wasn't quite spinning the engine fast enough. Took a long time to figure it out.

I'm not sure I fully understand your description but . . . If when hot, the engine spins over, and you don't think you need glow-plug heat - that's one situation. For example, after driving awhile, you shut if off - and then ten minutes later - it cranks but won't start. That is a common wear-problem inside the DB2 injection pump. Ofen causd by head & rotor wear. Some people - especially with Military Humvees with 6.5 - pour cold water on the pump to get it going. If - shortly after shut-down - it hardly even cranks - then you cannot expect much else to work - especially if voltage in the system drops to 8 volts or lower while cranking. If that is the case - find out - first - if batteries have the propery current reserve by load-testing. Then check the same at the starter where the main battery lead connects to the solenoid. Also, make sure that nut is tight - it often does not get tightened properly. And often, the main power tap that feeds the glow-plug control circuit connects on the same post. If the nut is loose, often it causes problems more when hot than cold due to thermal-expansion. If all those connections are good - and have good current - maybe it's as simple as your starter. Those Delco 28MT 6.5 starters are hardly worth fixing - since you can buy them brand-new for $100 - sometimes less. I just bought three brand-new Delco GR starters for 6.5s for $67 each.

Too much starter information? in reply to Tx Jim, 04-13-2007 03:50:14
You've got to keep an eye out for the best deals - and I assume most people don't buy starters before they need them - but I do. I have over a dozen diesel trucks with 6.2s and 6.5s - so I don't mind having spare parts on the shelf. The last brand-new Delco 28MT starters I bought were brand-new OEM surplus-leftovers. There are many sellers on the Net selling them - but prices vary from what I paid - at $67 each to sometimes over $200 for the same starters. I also bought several starters for my Ford 6.9 and 7.3 diesels at the same price. The original OEM Delco 28MT starters are made in Japan or China and the best ones are rated at 4 KW of cranking power. Delco #s 1113270 and 1113269. But, some factory-installed Delcos were rated less at 2.9 KW of cranking power. I assume you don't want to read a complete history of starter-motors - but some people like to know what they are buying. At present - if you need a starter - now - your best buy is a Chinese Delco-clone. Even if you bought direct from AC Delco you're still going to get a Chinese starter. I've used them and they've been great. It gets as cold as 30 below zero here - and these starters have worked just as well as any of starters with the Delco name tag on them. They are for sale on a daily basis at prices from $80 - $100 depending on who you buy from. Just make sure you are buying new - and not "factory refurbished." The Chinese starters are usually sold as # 6468 or # 6469. Last ones I bought were the # 6469s at $79 each and rated at 3.7 KW. That was six months ago. I see now most sellers are offering the # 6468 instead which is rated at slightly less cranking power at 2.7 KW. I haven't searched for starters recently - I sugest you go to Ebay or Ebay Express since many sellers keep and "on-line" store there. I bought my last Chinese starters from DB Electrical - they have their own Website as well as an Ebay store - but their Ebay store prices are usually lower. Right now - go look at Ebay item # 130099087796 for $95. DB Electrical phone # is 800-753-2242. Just remember that their phone prices are likely to be a lot higher than their Ebay-store prices unless you mention it. And, there may be better deals. Usually, someone just starting out as a seller - sells a bunch at a low price to undercut all the other sellers - then as time goes on, raises prices. So again - try: 130099087796 for $95 new Ebay Motors or 180104014077 for $91.50 new at Ebay Express

If you've got time on your hands, they will come up for sale cheaper, now and then.

I agree with jdemaris, my landlord has half a dozen 6.5s and a couple of them do that, just carry a jug of water with u and when it does act up just give the injector pump a shot and let it sit for a minute or 2 and it will fire right up. We had another truck do the same thing once though and it ended up being a pinhole in a fuel line. the line wouldnt leak fuel but was sucking air. good luck

Check your battery to starter cable.
