Do you really need 4WD or FWA? Depending on your environment, there is a good chance you don't.
A 2wd tractor with chains and some weight will go almost anywhere; and you will save a bunch of money, which you can use for implements you will need/want.

Just a thought. There are a vast number of different makes/models that are great tractors. You will be better off buying something older/major manufactur than considering a farm trac or tool store tractor made in china.
A few very good ones off the top of my head in 2wd are IH 300 or 350 utility; Massey Ferguson 135....the list goes on and on.

Good luck!

If he has a loader, he will definitely want MFWD, unless he is in a climate zome that gets no weather (Ariz, SO. Cal., etc.) You are right about the IH and Massey, they are tops in their size range. Also ditto on the no name chinese brands, they are cheap and they stink, an older US brand beats a shiny new chinese any time.

Just make sure it doesn't have contractor tires on it. My neighbor has a 33 HP NH with that type tire on it . I can out cut him any time on a hillside with a 27 HP with reg farm tread his tractor won't stay on the side of a hill wants it slide off . I can pull two # 12 bottom plows his tractor just sets and spins . I told him to change tires but to do this he has to buy tires and wheels .

The industrial tires can be ok for some stuff. I have em because my ground is very soft. They always dig in for plenty of traction, and the front ones can handle the loader much better than the ags. They put a lot of loader on these little new machines. Mine will move a 4000 lb pallet to about 4 ft high, on a machine that only weighs 6500 lb. It will put a 2500 lb pallet to the top.

The other reason I got them is I take the thing in the woods for logging and the ag sideways aren't really very tough.

On harder ground though they aren't good at all. The 4wd saves you there but they aren't the ticket. The best tires for our area is the R1-W's but they cost a bunch and the rims are expensive.

I will say stay away from Titan tires, I don't know if them buying Goodyear has helped but I've got 50% wear on a set of fronts in 200 hrs, the industrials were supposed to last longer than the ags. Used to go through a set of ags just as fast.

I have noticed that too. I have also seen some other kinda tire on some of the Deere's that had a curved bar ? industrial type. Dealer said it was to help not slip as bad on side hills. I never tried one of those-yet.
