Normally I leave it unheated except when Im in it. I over built the heat to allow me for a quick warm up, personally, I like to work at about 72. Takes me 2 hrs or so to get up to that. Overhead fan forced electric with bottle top supplimental propane if its real cold.

I turn the heat on and go eat breakfast if it makes 55 degrees it'll shut off, I turn it off when I'm done. I have a "hot" room that has a sink, toilet, all the oil grease and office. I keep that at least 50 all the time and 70 if I'm in the office part of it. All is heated by a natural gas boiler. The shop is 32' by 85'.

Forced air wood furnace in the corner lets me work in a t-shirt while it is 20 degrees outside. The furnace was free and the wood just labor. Real luxury every time I fire it up.

Comments:
I installed a ground source heat pump system in my shop last January. We've been keeping it at 55 when were working. Had a used oil heater before but that was always a mess. Waiting for the hot weather to hit so I can check out the air-condition side.

I keep mine at 45. When I'm out there working I bump it up to 55 or 60.Sometimes higher with the wood stove.Things don't rust as bad if you keep it above freezing at nite.

I keep my chore tractor in there is the reason for leaving it at 45.Its warm enough that all the hydraulics work good without warming up the tractor.

I find it real hard to get motivated under 20 or over 90. :) Minnesota gives both. And during the good weather in between I should be farming in the fields, not in the shop.

Someday. Someday a heated shop.....

When you do build, if you stick it underground you can solve both problems with annual heat storage. I won't be building any more above-grade heated buildings.

Nice to have snow on the ground (last Saturday) and 66º inside without doing anything. Summer, similar.

I have a smaller shop, 24" wide 34" long and I know there are better systems but I use a Miller Gun Mobile Home type furnace. Shoots air out the bottom. It"s on a raised platform. They are usually easy to find used in good condition. I have $275.00 in whole system and I absolutely love it. Northern Vermont gets cold occasionally. 20 to 40 below zero. Have a Goodun. Sorry, missed the point. Shop stays at 40 degrees. Turn thermostat up to 60 and I'm ready to go in about 15 minutes. (Excellent insulation and storm widow and doors)
