excessive sparks

On a 1947 john deere "D" with electric starter, 12 volt system and a Wico magneto there are excessive sparks flying from the area where the hot wire(it's a positive to ground system)attaches to the generator when I start the thing. It starts fine. I've tightened and retightened this connection and it comes back to sparking the next day. does anyone know if this could be a problem with anything other than a bad connection. I'm afraid of lighting-up my barn. Thanx

if the wire has one of those pinch or solder on ends-- make sure the wire is tight in the wire end-- if not you can tighten all you want and it will not help-- we had a ford that wouldn't start good et turned over slow== after racking my brain I found the wire on the ground end wasn't making good contact in the wire end- pinched it with vise grips and took care or the prob. of course we put a new cable on

Brad, Before you burn your barn down send me a email and I'll fire off a wiring diagram to you for that D. It's hard to say when we don't know what shape your wiring is or what may be hooked wrong to where. Is the terminal just loose in the generator maybe or insulators busted out? Bad brushes? A local electric repair shop can fix that part for you. I will tell now do NOT hook any battery powered voltage wire to that Wico magneto as it makes it own power and battery voltage will fry and ruin it.
