Tractor work for others?

I have created a beast by letting people know I have a tractor. I love to help people and don't mind doing things for them. I really enjoy it!

Usually they cover my gas and buy me lunch etc.

I had a serious question to start cutting a field on a regular basis today. I am going to go look at it next week. About 6-8 acres of regularly cut field.

2 Questions.

1. What is a fair way to charge for time and wear and tear?

2. What do I need to know about liability? If I start this on the side do I need some kind of insurance?

Thanks!

This year I am going to charge 115.00 for the first hr, and 85 each additional hr. You should get insurance. I pay 1,400 a year for one million liability ins. I have been doing this for almost 13 years now, in Calif. I also do discing, which I will charge the same. The fire departements require weeds to be cleaned around houses uo to 100 ft. If the home owner doesn't do it the fire dept has it done, and puts the cost onto the tax bill, with a hefty admin charge. I am retired now, and this gives me a chance to use my old tracotors and make some money doing it. If you have the time do it. I make it a practice to never mow when kids are around. Stan

Make sure you have insurance. Most people think their home owners, renters or farm insurance will cover them, WRONG. As soon as you start charging you need either a rider or a different policy. The big problem is not likely going to be between you and the owner but between you and another party. You could cause an accident on the road to the job site someone could look over at you in the lot and claim you caused the mishap. I dislike insurance but better to be safe rather than sorry.

I charge $50 an hour for my L285 30 HP Kubota and $65 for my Case LA although that may ho up with $3.00 gallon gas.
I also have a $200 Minimum if I have to travel very far like across the street. You can drop the Minimum if you have another job near by or more work for the same without taking the tractor home Or he's a good friend or you like like working for him and its over $150.
Just remember it cost more than gas to mow a field you will have to pay for parts that brake and thing that you hit will do damage to your tractor like tires and such. If you hit anything of his its his fault for not removing it from the field or marking it. let the guy know about that some people think its your fault if you run over a buried hydrant or gas line or something of that nature.
Walt If in Oregon watch out for the Lanscape police you can't do anything that they want to do themselves like roto-tilling lawns Hey i don't make the stupid laws.

I cut with a 1715 ford/New holland 27 HP 4wd & 5' kingkutter here in WV . I charge $40 an hour from the time I leave the house till I get back,
with a 4 hour Min . I don't tram my tractor on the road I haul on trailer. I am retired and if they don't want to pay me that then they can pay one of my neigbors $55 an hour to do same job .

Are you cutting grass? or plowing dirt? How big is the tractor? If it is cutting grass then I would charge $30/hour minimum and if you get insurance then more. I was the neighborhood kid that cut the grass for the old folks on the street with a push mower and I got $10-15 per lot, city lots. No insurance, just hard work and a pair of sneakers. Of course that was 25 years ago or so.

I have a ford jubilee with a 5 ft brush hog. This would be cutting grass.

Should I expect to cut it monthly or more or less often?

I would cut it when it needs to get done, Like when it looks bad and shaggy. Your time is valuable and if the guy that owns the land wants it done every week or 2 then charge the $30/hour (kind of giving him a break) Also how far is the field from you? If it is 1/4mile away then dont charge him for driving there but if it is 3 miles or something then charge him drive time too. If it was me I would charge the guy a fair price so that you make money and the guy wants to keep having you cut it for a long time and he feels like he is not getting ripped off. (I think that is a good way to keep a customer) If you have to buy insurance then charge more to cover that expense.

As the other guy says $50-60 and hour and you provide the fuel. Also if your worried about insurance just write up something to covers you and him if something did happen. In most states thats legal and it covers you both, in case you get hurt or something he has gets say hit by a rock etc.

I charge 45$/hr for hogging with a 6 ft'er and it starts from when I start the tractor to go there. I also charge about 60$/hr for driveways, snowblowing in the winter. I burn much more fuel blowing and it is a pain since people like to leave junk in the snow. In Feb I chewed up 400 ft of best quality 3/4" rubber hose into the blower. Took me an hour to cut it all out. They have lots of shorts hoses now.

How can you charge when you are havin' so much fun? Last year cut 6 acres about 8 times. Church gave me Cracker Barrel card for $50. I'll do it again if they let me.
