HI Gang;
You guys have the JD4020 as your Classic tractor, over here from that period we have the Ford 5000.
Arguably the best and most useful tractor from the late 1960's & early 1970's, it would perform well and excel at any job.
4 cyl diesel 75HP gross; 4F & 1R with hi & lo, independent PTO.
This example is owned by one of the mechanics who works at the NH dealers, and was owned from new by his family. This is approx 1973 model with safety cab. Ford's suffered from porous engine blocks, and this one has had a later improved block with X ribbing on block sides. Outstanding off farm condition.
Commands very good prices to-day by collectors.
Cheers David

REFERENCE SELECT-o-SPEED

Hi Gang;
SOS was really a total disaster, and had almost disapeared by the early 1970's. Many SOS tractors were converted to standard gearboxes, Ford offered a special price for the conversion box.
Today collectors are wary of any SOS tractor, there are no spares and very few people who know how to service-repair them.
Did you know the engineer who designed SOS left Ford to join JD, where the principal was perfected and apeared many years later in JD 6000 & 7000 tractors ! Cheers David

My Dad and I tried a Ford 871 in 1959 with SOS. It was painted a gold color (colour?) and performed very well in our brief trial. My Dad was sold on it but I talked him out of it. It was a real disaster on the 6000 Commander series. It was all they offered on that tractor. Ford tried to make good by offering the farmers a new tractor and the only additional charge would be for new tires (tyres?) unless they wanted their old tires (tyres?) mounted on the new tractor. The new 6000's broke down as fast as the old ones. (Transmission failure).

David: There are many on this side of the pond who also think the Ford 5000 was the best farm tractor ever built. Many are still working. My neighbor bought a used one about 25 years ago that, in his words, "was completely worn out". He uses it for chores every day. It sits outside with engine heater plugged in.
