im in the process of building a hunting/ camping cabin on my land up in the woods. i plan to seal up any seams at the bottom to keep pests out. i was just wondering if theres any good way to keep snakes out of it. ive seen thoughs things in northern tool magazine that are supposed to repel rodents from the area but i want to keep snakes out of the area. yea im afraid of snakes. on my family farm no one my great grandfather, grandfather, uncle or me has ever seen a snake in any of the fields and its been in the family since 1901 so i never really grew up around snakes. i dont like em at all

All we get for snakes is garter snakes up here.(thank god) as i just hate them but i have noticed that if you pour some salt around they leave,,,and if you got them in a pit dump in some hilex or clorox stuff.

Some folks claim that Sulphur will repel snakes. There is a product sold that claims to repel snakes, I think it is just Sulphur..

If you've seen none so far you must be way up north. Truly, then, you should realize you can relax about any danger from a snake, even in your bed! they just won't be there and if they were they wouldn't be the sort to hurt you. Having said that, these fears aren't really logical anyhow. If you can keep mice out you won't see any snakes. Concentrate on getting rid of the mice etc. Read about the snakes described in your area and you should develop a real knowledge and appreciation for these critters. You will even look forward to the opportunity to see one.

We find at least two or three snakes in the house every year. If found that when the snakes are around, there aren't any mice.:)

Snakes will will tend to go where they find food. So keep the rats, mice, rabbits, squirels, moles & any other small critters they would consider to be dinner out and snakes shouldn't have much interest in the place.

Is it going to be a wood foundation on dirt or can you pour a slab and build off that ? I'd figure your construction details to be tight on paper and do the best you can while building it, having an eye for keeping all joinery tight. One thing comes to mind to keep the rodents from climbing would be something like the termite shields used by the sill plate on houses. Metal flashing like piece that keeps the insects from climbing. Give it some careful thought, you'll come up with some good ideas, before you build. rodents don't like having to chew metal, some tight knit hardware cloth can be good to stuff in voids.

We are fortunate to not really have venenmous snakes here, and I'll say that the corn snake is a friend around here, they love rodents.

Use cellulose insulation, the borax in it will kill mice and a few others.
