Tom43 Yes and no. My brother and I collected and used all manners of side valve tools over the years. For L-head and small engines. This presents a small problem. There must be a nique, a small way by which--actually YT did this for awhile ,i thought. Whereby a person lends a tool and actually gets it back.I for instance gets some small sum for the use and YT or whoever takes care of shipping and investigation of 3rd party if they don't return. As an aside the semicircular ratchet thing I used a lot was a cheap JC Whitney knockoff of a good tool I found later. But it worked.I couldn't find the Sunnen,AAmco etc back then nor afford them. I don't see why you should now have to go through this if you have a real need. I would just pack it on up and send it to you or somebody for the price of postages but it doesn't work that way anymore. I just get ripped off. Think about the width of the area you have to work between valves and the avenue by which you approach the side of the block. Certain Snap-On and Sunnen made great tools for this with big knob control at top and angled body. So do some investigation and find what you need.

Those tools are available from many places, new. KD sells them - #917 and #718, Herbrand #2364, etc. Snyders and Mac specialize in old Ford repro parts and they sell the tools also.

I know just what you are looking for a valve spring compressor-- we have one wouldn't part with it for the world - if you find one hold onto it-- we still have a 49 ford PU and an extra engine (seized but no cracks very restorable) ooh the memories

I have some of those tools come in handy now and then on this old stuff. Might look on e-bay under old tools.

Is that a tool that looks like a prybar with a horseshoe washer shaped end? Stan

Tom, your just about 6mos too late. I gave all my flat head tools away to a friend that restores the old 40's + cars.

Just keep your eyes open at yard sale and flea markets. I've seen them show every so often, not many individuals even know what flathed tool are even for!!

napa has the tool to hold the adjustable lifter while adjusting. a small engine spring compressor gets the keepers on.now if you want to grind the valve seats, thats a different story. lucas

An old-timer at a local machine shop told me once while I was working on an 8N with adjustable lifters that they never had the "required" spanner for adjusting the tappets; they just drilled a hole in the side of the lifter bore, and inserted a piece of brazing rod to engage the slot in the side of the lifter. [Since they're not hydraulic lifters, it's not like you're gonna drill an oil passage or lose any oil pressure.] The brazing rod kept the tappet body from turning while you adjusted the cap screw in the end of the lifter.

I thought he was pulling my leg, but when I heard the same thing from a couple of other machine shops, I tried it...and it worked like a charm.
