I'm working on a '98 Dodge 3500 Diesel with a 5 speed manual, that has a speedometer that is not working. I'm told it will come up for a little while but not often. I pulled the speed sensor off the rear diff. and it reads zero ohms and the red wire going to the sensor reads .440 volts with the switch on. Am I barking up the right tree checking this sensor? I got a book on this pickup but it only has a rudimentary wiring diagram and mentions nothing about the speedo. What else could I check? Jim

The problem is fixed. I replaced the speed sensor, which was on the top of the rear pumpkin, and all is well. I didn't realize there were so many different locations for the sensor in that model year. The parts man had a little trouble finding it until I told him exactly where it was located on the truck. The new sensor is reversed from the origional in the fact that the plug in is pointed the opposite direction but they include a harness extension so that the wire can make it over there. There is also a newly designed shield included that supposedly protects the sensor a little more. Thanks to all for the help. Jim

i had a '91 d3500 dodge that the speedo would jump up for a while and then go back to 0, the sensor on the side of the tranny was full of dirts and mud, pulled it out and got some goods contact cleaner, air can duster and cleaned it out real good, put it back in and it worked fine, i'd check that first, thats a expensive little jewel to replace

The 98 uses a signal from the rear axle anti-lock brake sensor to run the speedometer.

I thought the speed sensor for the speedometer was om the transmission. Th one on the rear is for the antilocks brakes.

For the year he's working with; the speedo sensor is in the rear axle.

The sensor in the top of the rear axle; right?

They have a high failure rate; as well as problems with broken wires in the harness to the sensor.

The new sensors have a steel protective "helmet" to fend off flying "pebbles".

I'll get a new one tomorrow. The old one came out without too much of a fight and it does have the 'helmet' already. The harness coming from the sensor is a little beat up from flying gravel but the wires inside look OK. Thanks. Jim
