Looks like we're all in the same boat and some even a sinking boat. Probably not all that unusual for early spring but I'm getting too old to remember last year and the year before that and the ... er what was I rambling about. That nice tee shirt weather just spoiled me I guess.
Glad the calf is improving and wish those of you in Maine and Wyoming the best. I don't feel so bad now our snow has either all melted or blown away.

Well, that calf that was born overnite is up anyway.Still wobbly, but the cow is staying in the barn with her. I'm about to go out and stitch the rest of them shut until Sunday when the weather is supposed to start to moderate. We've got 25 degrees at 1:30 PM. I'll be amazed if it goes any higher. Missed the record low daytime high by 1 so far. Was 24 in 1972,back when they were saying NEW ICE AGE.

%#@* Weather--You got that right! in reply to PhilcaseinWPa, 04-05-2007 05:32:02
Phil et al --

Not to play one-upsmanship here, but we here in the Pine Tree State are being hammered by a snowstorm (it started about 5 p.m. yesterday afternoon and is still going). So far we in the central part of the state have about 15 inches of the white stuff accumulated, and it's still coming down. Other areas of the state are reporting up to 18 inches of accumulation.

The ground was bare before we got this:

Not a lot of people out on the roads, schools are closed today...

And one more photo, just to keep it tractor-related:

Just got in from plowing -- what a miserable job! The ground had thawed, and the snowplow wants to dig down in and throw my driveway on top of my lawn... If there had been less snow I would have just waited a day or so until it melted, but with this much snow it had to be moved...

I don't ever remember getting this much snow in an April storm; closest was back in 1985, when we got six inches or so...

Grandfather always used to call a spring snowstorm "poor man's fertilizer," as he claimed the snow brought nitrogen with it out of the air...

Anyway, that's the situation here. Hope you folks are doing better where you are.

Hey Phil...
I definitely feel yer pain! We had been enjoying warm spring weather (after going through the coldest/wettest winter we've had in several years) when we had a sure 'nough blizzard last wednesday/thursday. Virtually every highway in central Wyoming was shut down for 'bout two days. We had 18" of snow overnight... the mountain just to the south of town had 30"... town 100 miles up the road had over 3 feet of snow... high country to the west had 6 feet! A couple days of warmer weather melted a lot of snow around here... but it's snowing again today and is supposed to continue til sunday. Oh well... nice weather can't be too far off now!!!

My father is covering his tomato plants with 5 gallon buckets just in case of frost. I guess the onions & peas will be OK?? You never know what a Maryland spring will bring!!!

You beat me to the punch! I thought I was gonna be the one to complain about the cold this morning! I had 19 degrees when I got up. Wind chill somewhere near 0. Had a young cow calve right out in the middle of the field. Little buggers ears were froze. I got her on the 4 wheeler and took her up to the barn, drove the cow up,she went back to licking her. That was 2 hours ago,she still hasn't gotten up. I tubed some warm milk replacer into her to warm her up. I was riding the 4 wheeler right on top of the ice on the puddles. The mud was frozen solid enough to hold up the tractor and a round bale. I don't give a rats rear end what the GLOBAL WARMING a$$holes say,the bulls aren't going out with the cows until July 1 this year! We dropped 18 calves in a 3 day ice storm the first week of April four years ago. 25 inches of snow in Rockland Mi this morning. Screw this, they were right in the 70s,new ICE AGE.

As I just told my BIL up in Kansas a few minutes ago, just gas up the snowblower, fire up the gas logs and enjoy.

Love the pretty yellow flowers on your weed, my wife plants those. Seriously, your weed grows good out here in Texas also. Never worry about them as soon as our heat hits, they are dead. I looked them up once in a book called "Weeds of the West" but don't remember what they are called. Since they aren't really a problem here, I promptly forgot.
