I have run adaware SE plus on my computer for years and have never had a porblem with spyware or viruses. Now, this week when ever I try to do a google search or any other kind of search it pulls up the results and then when I click on one it gives me something else that is not what I clicked on. Sometimes it is another search page, sometimes it is a page trying to sell me something, sometimes it is some kind of pornography. Adaware SE Plus can't find it, so I downloaded spybot search and destroy and it didn't find it. What next? this is getting annoying.

I have BTDT and know exactly what you have to do to fix it. No, you don't have to buy anything. You have to do a system restore on the computer to an earlier date when the computer was working properly. Go to START>>>ALL PROGRAMS>>>ACCESSORIES>>>SYSTEM TOOLS>>>SYSTEM RESTORE>>>RESTORE TO AN EARLIER TIME. Now put in a date about a week ago when it was working right and let it reset itself and clear up all the crap that is on there since a week ago. It should start itself up and be working fine after that. Follow the arrows on my instructions and you should have it. I have done this with success about 3 times in the last few years and it works every time. Good luck.

When this happens, open "Windows Task Manager", control-alt-delete. Look under processes and push the "CPU" column twice, this will get all active processes to the top and tell you whats running and how much cpu its using. See what "Image Name" looks out of place or if you don't know google them. The type of virus you have should be easy to find, but you'll have to do some research to get rid of it.

We need to know this stuff. Since a lot of folks who know are here, I've a question. If an existing anti- viri program is running while another is downloaded do not they spend more time fighting than getting the job done?

Pretty much, most of the problems I have fixed on friends computers were caused by having 3 or more anti-virus, anti-spyware programs running at the same time. Poor computers were spending so much time looking for bad stuff they couldn't do anything else...

Personally I don't run any kind of anti-anything and have never had a problem. However I do know what to do and what not to do when checking emails and surfing the net.

Luke have you tried the Microsoft malicious software removal tool? Follow the link below. Download it to your desktop and run a manual FULL SYSTEM SCAN. It will only report to you the nasty stuff that it removes but it removes tons of stuff that it will not give a report on and that most spy-ware / ad-ware programs do not remove.

Hijaak is a very good program - it is a little utility that scans everything that has been added or is helping your browser - anyone can do a scan - but it takes someone with some pretty good knowledge to know which ones to put a check mark in and to fix -

for a temp fix just go get a different browser (like opera or firefox) if you are using explorer

copy this line to your browser address bar.
Link
Download spybot search and destroy. That should fix your problems. After you install it download all the updates.

The download link is on the RIGHTHAND SIDE OF THE SCREEN

guess I should read a little more carefully. I see that you have listed that as one you tired.

Did you try running it while in safe mode? IF you go to www.filehippo.com there are other adware and spybot scanners there as well. I also like to look through the add/remove programs list and remove what I don't recognize.

Hijackthis is available from filehippo.com but you have to know what you are doing to use it. Generaly if I see something I don't recognize listed in Hijackthis I do a google search on it and see what comes up.

AVG free edition has never found anything for me. Ad aware has found stuff when AVG said my computer was ok.

How do you expect anything good for free? After running a purchased Adaware utility. I bought the top of the line AVG Antivirus and spyware remover. It found 132 items on the 1st scan and 380 more on the second scan. Even Firefox has some spyware built into it.

Some of the baddies place themselves in 3 different areas of your computer, & reinstall themselves as you try to remove them. Need to follow specific steps to get rid of them from all areas in the proper way. The Adaware type scanners aren't up for that.

If you can write down the>Link

Also find the web site for a program called hijackthis! - it is a free small program that really helps to find these types of baddies. There is a German web site that will decipher the results you get, and tell you which lines are bad things in your computer registry. Of course messing with your registry can cripple your computer if you mistep, so be careful.

Adaware is not nearly as good as it used to be - I've read that malware providers can "buy off" Adaware so that it won't find theirs. Most people don't pay for Adaware, so it's one of their ways to make money.

Try removing Adaware and then download and install Windows Defender from Microsoft:

If it is "easy", this should find and remove it. If it is "hard", sometimes it requires a reinstall of Windows... Just depends on how deeply it's burrowed into the system files.

The Firefox browser works well for me and is more secure from "hijacks" and "popups" than "Internet Exploder".

I agree on using Firefox, it is a simpler browser but still has everything you need to surf the web, includes the new tab browsing. Firefox is less prone to hackers than IE.
