Something I've been wondering:

Say you buy a used car or truck and want to drive it home. How can you legally do it without getting plates for it first?

When I bought my first car, I drove it about 150 miles with no plates. Didn't get pulled over.

When I bought my truck last year, I got pulled over. Cop said I should have paid for the truck, went to DMV to get plates, and then picked up the truck. Is that the only legal way to do it? If so, its kind of a pain, especially if the vehicle is any distance away.

Back in the day, my dad would just take any old plates he had that were current, and put them on the new vehicle to get it home. Not legal, but it worked.

As mentioned, every state is different, many have some sort of temporary tags, call your home state Dept of Motor Vehicles and check it out. Other than that -legal options - buy and then register the vehicle first , tow it, haul it on a car dolly, trailer or roll back. As mentioned by others, in NY you will get in more trouble for uninsured and un registered vehicle than its worth to try going far without legal plated.

Having dealt with about a dozen different states and their DMV regulations, I can tell you that the procedure is different in each state. You'll have to talk to your local DMV to find out how they want you to do it in your state.

I like the process described below that is used in ND. Every state should adopt that one.

In Utah, they expect you to go to the DMV with your new title, pay your fees and they give you a 96 hour (4 day) permit so you can drive it around getting it inspected etc. Then when you return to the DMV with your inspection form, they hand you your new plates. Well, that still means 2 trips to the DMV and that's just not acceptable to most people, so they just drive home with no plates and take their chances. I've done that a few times. I've been pulled over once but the cop let me off the hook when I showed him the title signed over and dated that day proving that I had just barely bought it and was just taking it home. Legally he could have cited me and impounded the car, but he was reasonable.

Another solution is to take your truck and trailer when you pick up the car and just trailer it home.

Arizona has a 3-day trip permit that allows you to legally drive a vehicle for the purposes of getting it home, inspected, and licensed. In North Dakota the dealers give you a 30-day permit so you have time to get the plates.

I know that my insurance will cover me in pretty much any vehicle that I drive, including rentals. I specifically asked if I would be covered in a vehicle I bought on a Saturday night and drove home Sunday (unable to call agent and add coverage) and they said yes.

YOU need to check with your state DMV and insurance agent to see what will be legal.

Atually; we have a good system in ND. When the vehicle is bought by private sale you just grab the last registration card and fill out your information as the buyer on the backside; then tape it in the window so the information is visible. You then have 30 days to get the vehicle registered.

And I bet all you guys buy insurance when you rent a vehicle.
If you read your insurance policy you will find, unless you are insured by a fly-by night, that YOU are insured in any vehicle you drive. You buy insurance for specific vehicles but when you drive something else temporarily, like a rental, you are insured.
Plates are another issue. Throw a pair of FARM tags in the truck or take them with you. Around here you're only supposed to go 30 miles from the farm but these guys go everywhere with no problem.

I have read my policy, it does NOT cover me in any vehicle I drive. If I replace a vehicle (trade) I have to report the trade to them with 2 business days. If I buy a new vehicle without getting rid of an old one I have no insurance until I call and notify them, then I have coverage as long as I am in good standing in my premium.

When I rent a vehicle I have the same coverage as I had on my own, but the vehicle has to be in a similar or "lesser" class. I can't own and insure a 2006 Taurus and go rent 2007 Corvette and be 100% covered for collision. They are not going to allow me to insure a $70,000 car with a policy written to cover a $10,000 car. They also specifically exclude coverage on any vehicle that is owned by my employer.

As for tags - if all you are going to do is drive it home - "borrow" a tag off a vehicle you already own but make sure you have insurance before you leave. Not being properly tagged could cost you a $100 ticket at the most if you get stopped. Not having insurance could easily be more then double and if you get in an accident it could cost several thousand.

It's going to vary by state. Most states have some sort of "transit permit" or "one-way trip permit" to allow you to transport the vehicle. This is almost a must if you buy a vehicle out-of-state.

Of course, you need to have insurance on the vehicle. A call to your insurance company will get you an insurance certificate. Most companies give you some time before you notify them of a new purchase, but that's not going to satisfy the patrolman.

The best way to do it for both buyer and seller is if you can both meet at the location where you go to register the vehicle. (Secretary of State in Michigan.) That way you leave with plates and a clean registration, and the seller leaves with their money and old plates.

Of course the other solution is to trailer the vehicle.

I agree with Mark, each state is going to be different.

I bought a truck a few years ago from an individual in Louisiana. We signed the papers at a notary's office and I bought temp plates from him for $10. My insurance had me covered for 30 days so that was not a problem. I drove it home, 640 miles, and did not have any problems. I drove it for 2 weeks before I was able to get it registered here in TN...

If it is a private sale have the seller write out a bill of sale stating sellers name, buyers name, vehicle description with vin number, and date of sale. It should be enough to get the vehicle home at least. I would be worried about ins. myself. Call your auto ins. agent and see about getting some sort of temporary coverage for a vehicle so you can get it home. If it is from a dealer then you should be able to get plates through them

I have been told by my insurance agent that I am covered under existing farm/ranch policy that I have a certain amount of time to inform them of my new vehicle..can't remember exact amount of time...days? and it's OK to drive it home.

In Texas the plates stay on the vehicle when it is sold so there is no problem driving it home.

Every vehicle i bought(all at dealers) have had a temp plate. Had to pay at the dealers for the plate. I"ve always heard private sales, in Illinois you have 48 hrs with a bill of sale to apply for the plates

I will also add that in N.Y. if you DO take a plate from another vehicle and stick it on one you are transporting your in for many tickets if you get caught.

In N.Y. if it's not registered then you are not issured either.

You will get the following tickets
Improper use of Plates
Driving an unregistered Motor vehicle
Driving without insurance

Manditory 1 year suspension of License
$300 dollar fine.
lottsa points on your drivers license when you do get it back

I found out the hard way over 20 years ago.

Here you sign over the plates on the the back of your registration card. There is a box for just that.
