Been looking for a work truck for my new business, Mobile Mower repair and servicing. I found a 82 Datsun with a utility bed for $800 it's got 107K miles and the body isn't rusted out or banged up and the interior is in fair shape but, it has a miss, I'm concerned that it might be something in the head valve ect. This engine has 4 cyl and 8 spark plugs, I'm unfamiliar with this ingition, does both plugs fire at the same time or are they made so the timing changes by firing on different set of plugs. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

I bought an 81 4x4 new and loved it. But even though it was always garaged and washed and waxed all the time it rusted like mad. The bed rusted through the first time while it was still on warrenty. And head gaskets Uuugh. Fun truck though. I pulled a small alum bass boat and that was all it wanted for sure.

Be sure you know what the miss is before you decide. They are great trucks (I own a 86 (I bought it for 50$) and it is strong. Both sets of plugs need to be operating correctly to get proper power out of it. JimN

haha, i remember my great uncle owned a datsun pickup with a 4 speed tranny. That thing rotted out right underneath the paint, it was so funny so see that thing with a load of mulch in it, the bumper was on the ground.

There aren't really any datsuns left in the U.S., but if i were you, i'd let the junk man pick it up.

I got one brand new and drove it for about 150,000 miles in ten years before the frame rusted out. I then put the engine and transmission in another truck for another 50,000 or so before that truck rusted out. The head gasket had to be replaced around 75,000 miles but that is when Cumberland farms gas was putting over 10% alcohol in the gas and messed up a lot of engines. It does have an aluminum head and a cast block so over heating can take out the gasket. The only other problem was the starter was susceptible to all the salt and sand on the roads. The dual ignition is set up to fire the second set of plugs at the start of the exhaust stroke for pollution and some power. With a cap and no load I could get 34 miles to the gallon on the open road and about 28 in town. I had an extra leaf spring and carried over a ton on it many times, although that did make the front end a bit light. I am still driving the same Nissan trucks to this day. With 500 pounds in the back I have gone though snow up over the bumper passing stuck front wheel drives and 4 wheel drives. One other problem with the 82s was the tail light in the bumper did not hold up to the cold north east winters. My next truck will also be a Nissan.

My old man had one of these. He bought it used with 86K on it. By 125K, it blew the head gasket. He surfaced the head and replaced the head gasket, but it happened again in a few thousand miles. The timing chain is a dog to get back in place since there is no way to lock the tensioner while the chain is slack.

The spark plugs don't fire at exactly the same time since the distributor cap is an 8 position model like a V8, the rotor button only contacts one contact point at a time as I recall. The spark plugs are different on the Intake and exhaust sides of the head. I don't recall his mpg being outstanding, even though it was a 5 speed.

Just my $.02

A buddy of mine bought a Datsun King Cab of about that year brand new. Over the years he had to change the head gasket a couple of different times because it blew. I am not sure he had the head planed or even checked for a flat surface, and maybe that is why he had to do the job more than once.

He liked the truck pretty well and kept it a long time. It got good mileage and was generally dependable. As I remember him telling me, the truck would run fine on the cheapest gas he could find, and he thought that was partly because of the twin spark plugs in each cylinder. But that Datsun rusted worse than any vehicle I have ever seen, especially in the bed area and eventually really looked bad. He quit running it because his son got in an accident with it and really messed it up.

Hi -

It's been a while and some of the details are fading - but I bought an '84 Nissan king cab pickup brand new and really liked it. I think both plugs fired at the same time - supposed to just help better burn the fuel.

I like the pickup and used the heck out of it - but got water in the transmission unknowingly during a big rain storm and few months later, chipped some teeth in high gear. The oil was so in the tranny was so milky, I don't fault the pickup - I just didn't realize it could get water in it so easily.
