This rain issue is starting to become serious.

Rained last nite and raining again this morning.

And then its gonna turn cold. So it will not dry very fast.

I haven't done any field work this spring yet.

How bout you guys? You wet also?

Gary

I need to ask a stupid question.
I live in Southwestern Kansas, born on a farm, worked around here and Eastern Colorado all my life and have NEVER heard of fitting the ground???
Would someone explain that too me?? I know we probably say some things down here that others would not understand.
I have worked and lived in Texas and worked with Okies so I have heard some strange things - But what does fitting the ground mean??
I am NOT knocking anyone just trying to figure out the wordage

Thanks - Ken

Gary,

I had the WHO/WMT big show on yesterday while I was hauling corn to the river and they had a GARY on from the Iowa City area, Was that you?

We got 2 tenths last night (6 mi west of Davenport) but north of us between Maquoketa and Dubuque I heard as much as 4 inches in places. I know Cedar Rapids was getting a big storm during our 10 PM news last night. We were dry the last 2 growing seasons here. Very unusual for my area. But the tank is "full" again so we are good to go, (over 5 inches since Mar 20) and good rains eariler too. We are at least a good week away from even starting around here and with temps trending down it will take even longer. No one has worked any ground in this area yet this spring. Kind of sounds the same throughout the cornbelt. Corn price is going to be back or I'll eat my best Oliver hat!

Got ground fitted and 20 acres of seedings in(perenial ryegrass, orchard grass, white clover with barley for cover). First time any tillage work has been done on this SW NY farm in March. Ground couldn't have plowed and fitted any better. Not growing corn this year so what ever happens now I don't care untill the end of May when I plant BMR sudangrass. Now it's time to get the cows out to pasture and let grazing season begin.

I'm going to read anyway Gary lol. We had some wet last few weeks but the way wind has been howling yesterday and today if someone lit some CRP grass it would still burn off the top and we couldn't do anything but watch it with mud underneath now. Can send you some of this wind but it might dry it out faster than you want like here. I checked some ground yesterday and we don't need anymore flash floods because the hard fast rains and hail got it packed hard on top now. Always one extreme to another. All you guys planted more wheat this time so probably going to bust our market later or maybe not? Did you end up planting any wheat and how does it look? Wheat looks good here so far but lots of bugs working on it too already. Lots here say they are planting corn but I just don't see how it can work here if it doesn't rain again for 6 months. I guess you guys will be planting everything to corn out to the edge of road this time when you dry out all fast and furious at once like here.

Gary,
In SW PA it dried out pretty well on the upland shale end of last week but then it rained on Sat. Less than an inch but enough to gat it too wet. If I didn't have this other day job I could have done some field work Fri., but the paycheck and benefits are nice. Susposed to rain tonight and turn cold tomorrow through the weekend. 77 and sunny today, 36 high Thur - Sun, mid to low 20s for a low, snow or rain. I think I'll keep the day job.
Phil

When I was home (3/17 - 3/24) Dad spent about two hours with the chisel plow working under some manure (and catching a ton of twine) and that's about as far as we've got. Had some real nice weather and got all the equipment ready to go, but since have had about a foot of really wet snow.

He is cussing the mud and slop, trying to calve out 125 head in this mess... tore the clutch out of the 1256 to boot!

Here in central Oh. it's been wet and muddy since september. We need about two weeks of no rain so things can dry out, the ground just can't absorb anymore. We're supposed to get more tonight.

Over here in NW Iowa we have had 2" since thurs but there are no ponds. A neighbor seeded oats on some sandy ground the other day but he said it really wasn't fit. We're headed for the Quad cities this weekend so I'll have a chance to check out your end of the state then. Jim

I'm sitting here waiting for the storm to blow over right now. We started calving last Friday. I haven't even ventured out in the rain to check yet this morning. I could have worked oat ground saturday, but that opportunity is gone now. I'm not gonna complain to loud though. I know we'll be crying for rain before summer's over.

I've managed to make one pass through the garden with the troy-bilt, and at least one of my neighbors has been hooked onto the disc, but nothing serious yet.

About the same here in central il. Dodged a couple bullets with big rains going around us over the weekend. We managed to only get 3 tenths. If you have seen the weather this morning there is a line of weather that has crossed the river and is bearing down on us so we will have rain in a the next hour or so. No field work has been done here, absolutley none. The forecast is for a big change in the weather afer todays storms, it will be down near 32 in the morning so any hopes of field work for this week are totally gone, probably even without todays rain. Wanted to plow a field of cornstalks this spring but there will be no chance to do that and I am sure other people are making changes in there plans also. The later it gets the more will change. If everything was normal we would see a few guys planting corn this week. Most times the week around the 15th to the 20th see the bulk of the corn planted. I dont worry to much because rain does make grain and nothing is worse than dry weather so I will work on the sprayer some more today and watch the markets. bill

Gary

It is raining to much here in West TX for our dry land farmers. One told me Sunday at church that the ground is so wet here that the water is just running off. Whats bad about that is that when it quits raining we may not see any again for six to eight months in these parts. Hang in there. Gary

Here on the coastal plain of Virginia it's just right for planting. Got my corn in Saturday, probably not as much as you guys but all I have and can do AND work a full time job--40 ac.
Ground is mid 50's 2 inches down and just moist enough to not stick to the planter. We'll get 2 or 3 days of cool weather the end of the week then it will warm up.
Will need some rain soon to keep things jumping.
