My buddy has a high mileage 1996 chevy tahoe with a 350. Recently is hasn't been starting well and today it wouldn't start at all. Being a gm product it was suspected to be the fuel pump, after all it was not buzzing like it should. Well we put a new pump in it tonight and it still won't start. We cannot hear the pump even try to work. A little further investigation shows that there is not juice to the pump. We have spark at the plugs and the engine cranks but no go without the gas.
My question is what things have to work in order for the pump to turn on.
What are some things we can check before it has to go to town for a checkup. thanks

It sounds like your fuel pump relay isn't working. There is a fuel pump fuse also. It should be in the big fuse and relay panel under the hood (but check the panel in the dash, too). Check the fuse first. The fuel pump is controlled by the computer. It should come on for about 2 seconds when you turn on the ignition, then when you crank the engine, it should come on full-time. There is also a switch located in the oil pressure sender that will bypass the relay when oil pressure gets up. If if won't get juice to the pump after cranking long enough to build oil pressure, it's either a bad fuse or bad wiring. There is a pigtail somewhere under the hood that should allow you to put 12 volts into it and make the fuel pump run, but I don't remember where it is. Usually a red wire, if memory serves. Also, be sure the ground is good in the wiring harness to the tank. Good luck and God Bless, Tommy

On My 91 GM there is a fuse on the firewall on the right hand side above the heater motor area . It is in a black plastic case with two wires going into it . you have to pull the plug out and it is a inline fuse holder. Mine quite this winter in the middle of a snow storm when plowing. I didn't even know it was there. Not sure if the 96 has the same fuse. Good Luck

starter pump relay, should be on the firewall under a plastic cover (that's where my 92 was)
